This invention relates to an improved gas burner.
- One object of the invention is to providea gas burner employing a centrating the flame upon the article to be heated in such a manner that said article will be heated more quickly and maximum efficiency and economy will be obtained from the fuel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the guard is spaced above the burner to define an air inlet slot at guard for admitting air to the outer series of portsof the burner and promoting combustion at said'ports while will tend to produce a heated zone immediately above the burner within the confines of the guard for providing warm air to promote combustion at the ports of the burner as a whole. a p y .A further object of the invention is to provide a gas burner employing a guard which will tend to protect the ,flame from extinction by drafts of air or'by liquids boiling over,
thus preventing a waste of fuel and the possible asphyxiation of persons in the vicinity. A still further object of the invention is to provide a gas burner wherein the burner and guard will function as a unit.

A better circulation of air will, of course, produce more rapid and efficient combustion. Integrally formed on the burner is a mix- 11 offset at its outer'end portion to form an enlarged valve head 12 which is provided with openings 13 in the outer end wallithereof. Fitting over the valve head is an air controlling valve 14: having openings 15 formed therein, said valve being rotatable istration for admitting air into the pipe 11.
The valve may be rotatably connected with the head in any approved manner. Formed on one or more of the burner tubes are notched supporting yokes, atypical one of which is shown at 17, said yokes being adapted to receive a supporting rod or rods 17' for maintaining the burner in operative position.
Associated with the outer wall 7 of the chamber 5 is a removable upwardly projecting substantially i'rusto-conoidal band or more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the flame guard extends upwardly in a plane with the outer wall of the chamber 5 for a distancesubstantially half its width and then is curved inwardly. The entire width of the guard 18 is substantially the same as the depth of the burner and the upper rim of said guard is of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the wall 7 of the chamber 5. Formed on said wall are preferably three spaced triangular seats 19 and carried on the guard are preterably three spaced adjustable rectangular legs 20. Formed in each of said legs is a longitudinally extending'slot 21 and extending through such slots and connecting the leg with the guard is a screw 22 which normally clamps the leg in an adjusted position. The legs are, of course, adjusted by sliding them up and down when the screws 22 are loosened, said screws limiting the travel of said legs. The legs'normally cooperate with the seats for mounting said guard in adjustably spaced relation above the burner to define an annular air receiving slot 2-3which may be varied in Width by adjustment of the legs.
As will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when the fuel is introduced and ignited, the flame from the raised ports in the outer distributing chamber 5 and in the outer end portions of the tubes 3 will be deflected inwardly by the guard 18 toward the axis of the draft passage 2 and thus con centrated upon the article to be heated. It is to be further understood that the inlet slot between the guard and burner will facilitate admission of air to the outer series of ports of the burner and thereby promote comustion at said ports,'while the guard. will, also, tend to produce a heated zone within the confines of said guard immediately above the burner for providing warm air to aid com bustion at the ports of the burner as a whole. In view of the fact that the guard extends above the burner for substantially half its depth, the mixture issuing through the ports is completely ignited before it hits the guard so that danger of forming carbon monoxide gas, which would be released if the mixture was permitted to flow against the guard, is prevented. It is clear, of course, that, due
to the relatively large amount of air admitted and the concentration of the flame, a more efficient burner is produced with the use of a less amount of fuel. '1'; is'further pointed out that, should liquid being heated m a vessel above the burner be caused to boil over, the guard will tend to deflect such liquid from the flame.
Referring now to the modification of the invention as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the numeral 24 indicates-an inner distributing pipe or chamber having radially extending burner tubes 25 formed thereon, and formed in said tubes are spaced raised ports 26. Connectingthe outer ends of the tubes and mounted in concentric spaced relation to the chamber 24 is an annular band or wall 27 having a shoulder 28 formed thereon. Associated with the band 27 is a frusto-conoidal guard 29 similar to that employed in the preterred embodiment of the invention. This guard is supported in the same manner as is the guard of the preferred form and aside from the above mentioned particulars, the modification of the invention is identical with the preferred form and functions in like manner.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: I I
1. A device of the class described including, in combination with a gas burner having a distributing chamber provided with a straight outer wall and fuel outlet ports, a flame guard .upstanding from said chamber and formed with a wall having its lower portion disposed to lie in vertical alignment with the straight outer wall of the chamber and its upper portion directed inwardly, means carried by the chamber and flame guard for adjustably connecting said flame guard to said chamber, and a mixture inlet pipe communicating with the chamber.
2. A device of the class described including, in combination with a gas burner having a distributing chamber formed with fuel outletports and having a straight wall formed with spaced seats, a flame guard carried on the distributing chamber, spaced legs adjustably mounted on the flame guard, said legs being adapted to cooperate with said seats for supporting the flame guard in an adjusted position on the chamber, and a mixture inlet pipe communicating with said chamber.
3. A device or the class described including, in combination with a gas burner having a distributing chamber formed with a straight outer Wall terminating at its upper side in an annular shoulder, said wall having spaced seats formed on its outer surface, a flame guard associated with the distributing chamber and having a wall comprising a straight lower portion and an inwardly directed upper portion, spaced legs mounted on said straight portion of the flame guard and being adapted to cooperate with the seats for I mountinfimthe flame guard in ition on the cham r, said legs bein shi ble vertically for defining an annu ar air inlet slot between the lower edge of said straight portion and the annular s oulder and sald guard being shiftable to overlie said shoulder for closing the slot.
