This invention relates to new and useful improvement in gin rib grinding machines.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine for grinding the under sides or mounting faces of the feet of gin ribs.
A further object of the invention is to provide swinging grinding wheels mounted so as to present their flat sides to the rib feet and to travel along said feet while grinding the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and novel means for bodily adjusting the rocking member carrying the grinding wheel, whereby the wearmg of its side is compensated and the rib feet are ground to the proper degree.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for actuating the rockers which carry the grinding wheelsytogether with rib clamping means and operating means therefor coacting with the rockers to clamp the ribs and to release them at predetermined positions of the said rockers.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:

In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a base. An upright central support or front standard 11 is mounted on this base and carries at its upper end a horizontal work table 12. An inclined rear standard 13 extends from the rear of the base to the center of the rear side of the table 12. The parts 11, 12

best'shown in Figs. 5 and 7. Upright yokeshaped rockers 18 have integral bearing col lars 19 at their lower ends snugly fitting on the trunnions so as to slide longitudinally of said trunnions as well as to rock thereon. To the front collar of each rocker is secured'a cap 20 into which the front trunnion 17 telescopes.
An adjusting screw 21 is threaded in the cap and has its rear end swiveled in the front trunnion 17. on the outer end of the screw for rotating the same. A locking wheel 23 is mounted on the screw s0 tl at its hub may engage, thecollar 24 of the cap and thus lock the screw in adjusted positions. It will be seen that by rotating the screw 21 the cap 20 will be caused to travel on the front trunnion 17, thus adjusting the rocker 18 longitudinally of its trunnions.
On the upper end of each rocker is mounted a pair of bearing boxes 25 in which a countershaft 26 is journaled. On each shaft a driven pulley 27 is fastened between the boxes. Each pulley 27 is driven by a belt 28, which in turn is driven by a pulley 29 fastened on the shaft 16.
On the front end of each shaft 26 is mounted a grinding wheel 30 made of carborundum or other suitable material, and when the rockers 18 are swung each wheel 30 presents its front flat side to the rear of the table 12. By observing Fig. 3 it will be noted that the right hand rocker is disposed at an angle to the left hand rocker which will throw the front side ofthe right hand wheel at an angle to the front side of the left hand wheel. This is done to conform to the undersides of the feet B of the rib A when the latter is held on the table 12.
A hand wheel 22 is fastened The front and rear standards 11 and 13 have integral bearing bosses 31, as is best shown in Fig. 6. A counter-shaft 32 is journaled in these bosses and has fastened thereon a worm wheel 33. As is shown in Figs. 4 and 6 the worm wheel is driven by a worm screw 34 mounted on a drive shaft supported in bearing bosses 36 on the rear side of the front standard 11. The drive shaft has a driving pulley 37 on its outer end.
For swinging the rockers I provide a toggle mechanism, which is best illustrated in Fig. 4 and includes bell cranks 38 each having universal connection at its upper end with a link 39. Each of the links is pivoted to a stud 40 at the top of the adjacent rocker. A pair of eccentrics 41 are fastened on the shaft 32 and each crank 38 has a roller 42 bearing on one of said eccentrics. The eccentrics are matched and could be made integral. Each eccentric has a kidney shape and as it revolves the lever 38 actuated thereby is swung, whereby the rockers 18 are swung toward and from each other. The rockers are connected by a coiled spring 43 tending to pull them together and this acts to hold the rollers 42 on the eccentrics.
A spring pressed clamp 44 is mounted in the table 12 and is engaged by the arch of the rib. At each end of the rear of the table clamp hooks 45 are mounted to slide vertically in said table, see Figs. 2, 3 and 5. The lower ends of the hooks below the table are pivoted to the upper ends of vertical pitmen 46. Each pitman has a collar 47 resting on a centrally pivoted lever 48 at the outer end of the latter. The levers 48 are pivoted on the front standard 11. Each pitman 46 extends through the outer end of one of the levers and rests upon a coiled spring 49 held on the pitman by a nut 50. One of the levers 48 carries a roller 51 at its inner end which bears upon the periphery of an eccentric fastened on the shaf The inner end of the other lever 48 rests upon the inner end of the lever carrying the roller and is pulled downward by a coiled spring Consequently the roller 51, when swung by the eccentric swings both levers 48.
When the roller 51 is on the lowest part of the eccentric 52 the clamp hooks 45 are raised so that the rib A may be engaged under the clamp 44 and its feet B positioned under the hooks 45. Vith the parts in this position the rockers are swung outward, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the rollers 42 are on the high points of the eccentrics 41. The revolving grinding wheels 30 are disposed outwardly from the feet B and as the eccentrics revolve to lower the wheels 42, the spring 43 swings the rockers together, whereby the front fiat sides of the wheels 30 travel along the under faces of the feet B.
As the rockers start their inward swing the roller 51 rides onto the high portion of the eccentric 52, whereby the levers 48 are swung so as to pull the pitman 46 downwardly and cause the hooks 45 to clamp the rib. Thus when the wheels 30 start the grinding action the rib is securely clamped and held. The eccentrics are so proportioned and arranged that the hooks 45 will remain depressed during the inward and outward swing of the rockers and the roller 51 will not ride ofi' of the high portion of the eccentric 52 until the wheels 30 have passed from the ends of the feet B on the outward swing of the rockers.
By this arrangement the ribs are automatically ground and by periodically adjusting the rockers by means of the wheels 22 the grinding is made uniform. The work table 12 is provided with a pair of resilient stops 54 against which the ribs are positioned to facilitate correctly locating the feet B- under the clamp hooks 45. After the rib feet are ground the ribs are passed on for the next operation after they have been manually lifted from the table.
Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations, may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is:
1. In a rib grinding machine, a rib sup port, rocking grinders for acting upon the under sides of the feet of a rib mounted upon said support, means for rocking said grinders, means for clamping a rib on said support, and means for actuating the clamping means co-aeting with the rocking means to clamp and release a rib at predetermined positions of the grinders.
2. In a rib grinding machine, a rib support, rockers on each side of the support, revoluble grinding wheels on the rockers, means for swinging the rockers transversely of the support, clamps for holding a rib on the support with the undersides of its feet in the paths of the sides of the grinding wheels, and means on the support for automati'cally actuating the clamps.
3. In a rib grinding machine, a rib support, upright rockers on each side of the support, means for swinging the rockers transversely of the support, grinding wheels, one mounted on each rocker, means for revolving the grinding wheels as the rockers swing, means for adjusting the rockers to compensate their wear, clamps for holding a rib on the support, and means for automatically operating said clamps to secure and release a rib.
4. In a rib grinding machine, a rib support, upright rockers on each side of the su port, grinding wheels mounted on the rocliers, means for revolving said wheels, means for swinging said rockers toward and from each other, an eccentric for actuating said swinging means, work clamps upon said support, levers for actuating said clamps, and
an eccentric upon the shaft of the first mentioned eccentric and disposed to operate said levers.
5. In a rib grinding machine, a rib support, upright rockers on each side of the support, grinding wheels mounted on the rockers, means for revolving said wheels, means for swinging said rockers toward and from each other, an eccentric for actuating said swinging means, rib clamps on the support, means for operating said clamps, and means operated in conjunction with the eccentric for actuating the clamp operating means.
6. In a rib grinding machine, a rib support, a base on which the support is mounted, a pair of standards mounted on the base, an upright rocker, a countershaft mounted on the upper end of the rocker, a drive shaft carried by the standards, driving means connecting the shafts, a grinding wheel mounted on the countershaft adjacent the rib support, elongated bearings carried by the standards concentric with the drive shaft and on which the rocker is journaled, and means for adjusting the rocker axially on its journals to move it toward and from the rib support.
