This invention relates to pads such as-sales pads or the like which comprise a plurality of superposed sheets of paper formed wlth main portions and stub portions defined by lines of perforations with the stub portlons v secured together by staples or the like.
The general purpose of the invention is to provide a sales or like pad such as described above in which the main sheets will tear uniformly from the stubs despite the more or less careless manner in which these pads are used.
T he foregoing and otherpurposes of the invention are attained in the sales pad shown 15 in the accompanying drawing and described herein. It is to be understood that the inven tion is not limited to the specific form thereof shown and described.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective View of a pad embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the pad comprises a series of sheets 10 each having a main portion 11 and a stub portion 12 defined by a scored line or line of perforations as at 13. Suchpads are usually constructed by stapling the stub ends together as at 14, 14:.
Heretofore the sheets 11 of such pads have tended to tear unevenly from the stubs unless very carefully removed. It was discovered that this uneven tearing usually occurred when pressure was not applied to the stub at the edge from which the sheets were torn. It has been found that this objection is overcome by providing slits or cuts 15, 15f
inwardly of the edges of the pad in alignment with the scored km: or l1ne of perforation and extending to points substantially opposite the stables 14. By this means the gripping power of the staple on the stub renders the pressure of the hand thereon unnecessary to obtain uniform and even tearing. The line of perforations of course must be sufficiently close to the staples that this gripping power will be effective.
It will be apparent that by the simple change shown pads of this kind have been greatly improved. It is to be understood that modifications of this invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit 1930. Serial No. 460,313.
thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A pad of the class described comprising a series of superposed sheets including main portions and stubs defined by lines of erforations, said stub portions being stapled together whereby the sheets are effectively gripped at the line of perforations and said sheets having slits formed therein inwardly from the edges thereof in alignment with said lines, the inner ends of said slits extending in from the edge a distance substantially not less than the spacing of said staple from said edge. I
2. A pad of the class described comprising a series of superposed sheets including main portions and stubs defined by lines along which the sheets are weakened for tearing the main portions from the stubs, means for securing said stub portions together whereby they are effectively gripped at said line of perforations, said sheets having slits formed therein inwardly from the edges thereof in alignment with said lines, the inner ends of said slits extending in from the edge a distance substantially not less than the spacing of said means from said edge.
