Description

H. 1.. 'BLOME Feb. 2, 1932.
TONGS Filed March 21, 1950 I ivylizioiize Patented Feb. 2, 1932 STATES HARRY L. BLOME, OF STONINGTON, ILLINOIS TONGS Application filed March 21,
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in tongs, for handling right plow blades.
Much difficulty has been experienced in right plow blades when the same are being 3 of the tongs engaging a blade.
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the tool engaging a blade.
3 represents a cross sectional view of the jaw portions of the tool engaged with a blade.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents the conventional right plow blade, which is considerably difiicult to retain when being sharpened.
These blades are provided with upstanding flanges 6 disposed in an acute angular disposition with respect to the blade proper. This is clearly apparent in Fig. 3.
The tool is generally referred to by numeral 7 and comprises a pair of crossed handles 8 and 9, pivotally connected together as at 10. The short portion of the handle 8 beyond the pivot 10 is provided with an elongated laterally disposed jaw 12, which is disposed obliquely for snug disposition against the bottom side of the blade proper, as in the manner shown in Fig. 3.
The complementary portion of the handle 9 is provided with a pair of inwardly disposed hooks 1111, extending substantially in the same lateral direction in respect to the crossed handles as does the jaw 12, as shown in Fig. 2.
It can thus be seen that when the obliquely disposed jaw 12 is engaging against the bottom side of the blade 5, the hooks 11-11 are engaging againsttheupper edge of the flange 6, and in this manner the blade is firmly held against displacement.
1930. Serial No. 437,919.
This tool is substantially devised for the purpose specified, and its peculiar construction is consistent with the peculiar construction of the blade described.
It is also to be understood that certain changes may be resorted to in the manufacture of the tool without departing from the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A tool for holding plow blades, wherein the blade is provided with an inwardly. obliquely disposed flange at one end; said tool comprising a pair of cross handles, pivotally connected together, one of the handles being provided with an obliquely disposed jaw for engaging the blades, and a pair of spaced hooks on the compleinental portion of the other handle extending laterally therefrom, in the same lateral direction from the handles as the jaw for engaging over the edge portion of said flange, said hooks lying substantially on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the aw.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
HARRY L. BLOME.
