Description

W. T. COGGESHALL.
Grate.
Patented Oct. 20, 1857.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. T. COGGESHALL, OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
STOVE AND FURNACE GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,434, dated October 20, 1857.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. Cocon- SHALL, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Mode of Supporting a Grate for Either a Stove or Hot Air Furnace; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1, exhibits a top view of a grate and its drawer slide as furnished with my improvement. Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3, a transverse section of such. Fig. 4, a top view of the drawer slide. Fig. 5, a top view of the supporting annulus.
In these drawings, A, denotes a circular grate provided with journals, a, b; B is the drawer slide which when applied to a stove, slides into and out of the ash pit in a manner similar to that in which a common drawer slides into its case, the said drawer slide being supported by and made to run on ledges projecting from the sides of the ash pit and arranged so as to bring the grate into a proper situation with respect to the firepot. On the top surface of this drawer slide is placed flatwise, a rotary ring, C, its position being preserved by four studs, cl, (Z, cl, (Z, extended upward from the drawer slide and against the periphery of the annulus. The said ring C, is constructed with hearings or recesses, e, e, for the reception of the journals of the grate. It also has a stop or projection, f, on which another projection, g, from the grate rests, when the said grate is in a horizontal position. By means of the said annulus or ring constructed and applied to the grate and the drawer slide in manner as described, the grate can be tipped laterally, or it may be vibrated horizontally as occasion may require, whether it be to discharge either cinders or ashes from the fire pot.
My invention admits of a clear space underneath the grate, that is no bar or shaft extends across the opening of the drawer slide under the grate for the purpose of supporting the grate and permitting it to rotate laterally, such bar or shaft carrying a journal to pass through a hole in the middle of the grate.
I lay no claim whatever to applying thegrate to its drawer slide in such manner as to enable said grate to be either turned horizontally or tipped laterally, such not being my invention, but
\Vhat I do claim is An improvement thereon, the same consisting in the above described new mode of con'ibining the grate A with its drawer slide B, viz, by a supporting annulus, C, separate from and arranged on the slide and made to support the grate substantially as explained, my invention affording a clear ash space under the grate, while it secures the advantage of allowing the grate to be either tipped laterally, or to be turned or vibrated horizontally as occasion may require.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this third day of May, A. D.
W. T. COGG ISHALL. W'itnesses JOHN W. NICHOLS, B. WILLIAMS.
