Description
Jan. 19, 1932. MCBRIDE 1,841,751
BARBER S COMB Filed June 10, 1931 Fly. 6.
lnvfnior v Homer MBfl'de I flllomey Patented Jan. 19, 1932 I onrrsn STATES PATENT OFFICE HOMER MCBRIDE, OF ELYRIA, OHIO BARBERS COMB Application filed .Tune 10, 1931. Serial No. 543,426.
This invention relates to combs, and has more particular reference to that type ofcomb especially used by barbers in cutting hair.
A still further object of the invention is to improve on that type of comb provided with guides engaging the cutting edge of the power cutters or clippers whereby the clippers rest on and areguided by the comb.
A still further-object of the invention is to provide a comb of the character above mentioned having improved teeth thereon to insure a better guiding of the hair than has been attained for other combs used for this purpose.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a comb of the character above mentioned equipped with improved means for accommodating the thumb of the hand supporting the comb.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the comb.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational view thereof showing the same as applied to the clippers.
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken substantially on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 respectively of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through a portion of the comb.
With reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that the comb includes a back 5 having substantially parallel teeth 6, 7 running at substantially right angles therefrom, each tooth having base 8 and a tip 9.
The teeth 6 are relatively coarse, and the teeth 7 are relatively fine and the series of teeth 6 and 7 are separated intermediate the ends of the back 5 of the comb by a relatively wide solid rest 10 extending at substantially right angles to the base 5 and parallel with the teeth 6, 7
The rest 10 is provided on opposite faces thereof with a concaved recess or seat 11 for accomodating the tip of the thumb of the hand holding the comb.
The teeth 6, 7 of the comb are so cut away that cutter guides 12, running in a line substantially parallel with but at a distance from the bases 8 of the teeth, project outwardly therefrom thereby forming guide surfaces, the guides having overhangs 13 which aids in keeping the cutter edge of the clippers C down so that it will not run over the tops of the guides.
Each of the teeth 6, 7 opposite to the guide 12 have their l0ngitudinal edge portions chamfered or beveled as at 14;, and in actual practice, it will be seen that the teeth chamfered as just describedwill pick up the hair and guide it to the cutting edge of the clippers in a more efficient manner than the teeth of such combs wherein the teeth are substantially square or rectangular in cross section. Such insures a smooth even cut of the hair.
The use of the comb is thought apparent from the foregoing, the power cutters at the cutting edge thereof pressed against the guides 12, the comb having an end portion thereof held in one hand of the barber, with the thumb of that particular hand resting in the pocket or seat 11 thus supporting the thumb out of contact with the teeth of the comb, so that the possibility of any of the teeth being pressed toward the head and thus becoming entangled with the hair is obviated, that is to say the guide on that series of teeth not in use for combing will be less likely to become engaged with the hair.
on that side thereof I am well aware that combs have been pro- I vided having guide means for the cutting edge of power shears and the like and accordingly I do not claim such broadly but do claim as my invention:
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A comb having a back and substantially parallel teeth running at substantially right angles therefrom, each of said teeth provided on one side thereof with a guide member for the cutter edge of barber clippers, and at the 7 opposite side thereof having opposite edge portions chamfered.
2. A comb having a back and substantially parallel teeth running at substantially right angles therefrom, each of said teeth provided on one side thereof with a guide member for the cutting edge of barber clippers, and at the opposite side thereof having opposite edge portions ehamfered, and a member projecting at right angles from the back of the comb between two adjacent teeth, said member having a thumb seat.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HOMER MCBRIDE.
