DETACHABLE HOSE SUPPORTER Filed May 17, 1930 i lllllllll lllllllllllllll mmmnnlnmwa Ell!!!l llllllllfi WITNESS IIVVENTOR b92049} 7805:: 7 MW BY A TTORNE VS Patented Jan. 12, 1932 UNITE-STATES ransom) PATIENTTWEE] D. :aosn, or VALLEY STREAM, ivnwxonx, essranon ro MODEL assassinate co. INC OF'BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION or NEW YORK nnrAoHABLn HOSE surron rnn" I Application filed May 17 of attaching the garter to the garment which will permit its easy removal when, for example, the garment is prepared for laundering. A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of means of attachment of a garter to the garment which will ment to which the garter is to be detachably garment have no such loop the-hook maystill properly distribute the strain and minimize the possibility. of the detachable elements injuring the portions of the fabric with which they are detachably associated.
Specific embodiments of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation illustrating the preferred modification of my invention in which a garter is attached to a fabric loop depending from the lower portion of the garment;
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 22 of Fig. 1 when the garter is under tension;
Fig. 3 is a view of the reverse side of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 with a portion only of the garter being shown;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the invention in a modified form of its possible uses; and
Fig. 5 illustrates the hook used to attach the garter to the garment in accordance with my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which similar reference characters identify similar parts in the several views, and particularly describing the modification shown in Figs. 1 to 3, 10 is a piece of fabric representing the lower portion of the garsecured. A loop 11 extends from said lower portion of the garment and has a straight lower inner edge 12 with which the long straight terminal edge 13 of the hook 14, preferably of metal, comes into contact when the garter is under tension, in use. The loop 11 is provided, on one side, with an aperture 15 finished into a buttonhole by stitching. The relatively narrow neck portion 16 of the hook has a bend of approximately 180 therein so that it is virtually bent back upon itself near one end and is associated at its other end with 1930. s r arivo. 453,169.
the slotted horizontal element 17 whereby the garter 18 of the well-known elastic type is suspended. The bottom portion of the loop 11 may be reinforced by a doubling over of the fabric forming one of its sides as at19Q. Such doubling over of the fabric whenused at the pointof its attachment to the garment as at 20 also gives a reinforcedconstruction at this point. v
Thehook 14 is providedwith'laterally extended terminal portions (flanges or wings)- 21,22 adapted to'form'the required interlock between said hook and the loop 11 when the former is inserted into the buttonhole in said loop. The terminal portions 21, 22, extending into the loopon-each side of the point of entry of theneckportion 16 intosaid loop serve to relieve the stress ordinarily applied atthe 'lowermost point of the buttonhole and dis- I tribute such stress overthe entire lower inner edge of the loop. The strain c'ausingtearing or ripping of the buttonhole is thus elimi-' nated'. When the garter is not under strain, as in assembling the garment prior to putting it on, the hook may swing freely from the lower part of the buttonhole, without receiving support from the-lower'eclge of the loop, though such lower loop edge will in that situation form a stop for the wings 21, 22 during any swinging movement, thereby serving to prevent the hook from escaping from the buttonhole./- The particularity of this construction is such that, except when there is a deliberate intention to remove the garter 18, for 'instance, preparatory to laundering,'the garter remains securely associated with the garment even under carelesshandling of the garment; In case the loop 11 should be torn or the hole formed in theQfabriC constituting the.
lower portion of the garment, for example, preferably at a seamed portion of the garment. While in this modified use 'all'of the advantages intended tobe derived from'the i 100 novel shape ofthe hook arenot achieved, the
extended terminal portions 21, Q2 of the hook will form the required interlock. Such buttonhole on the seamed portions of the garment may be provided for emergency use should the loop 11 of my preferred embodiment be torn or loosened from the garment to which it is attached.
It is to be noted that with the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, as the wearer moves, the long terminal edge of the hook causes the movement to be translated through its straight edge portion 13 to the lower inner straight edge 12 of the fabric constituting the loop, thus distributing the strain over an extended strip of fabric rather than at a particular point as would be the case if the hook were supported at its narrow portion. The straight edge 13 need not necessarily be a continuous edge but so long as it has straight edge portions parallel with the lower part of the loop, it will represent an embodiment of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a detachable garter construction for use in connection with corsets and similar garments, the combination of a loop structure from which the garter is suspended and comprising two plies of fabric united at the bottom to form a pocket, one of said plies provided with an aperture beginning above the bottom of said pocket, and a rigid garter anchoring member adapted to engage such loop and comprising in its normal operative position a garter fabric engaging portion which extends horizontally, a relatively narrow neck portion which extends vertically from said garter fabric engaging portion, said neck portion being bent horizontally transversely to the vertical plane of the garter engaging portion, and also downwardly in the form of a hook, and wings extending laterally from the free end of such neck portion and providing an extended straight under edge, said hook being so dimensioned that when it is in position within said loop, the whole of said under edge thereof rests upon the bottom of said pocket, whereby the pressure exerted upon the hook is distributed over a relatively large area when such hook is interlocked with the loop.
2. In a detachable garter construction for use in connection with corsets and similar garments, the combination of a loop structure from which the garter is suspended and comprising two plies of fabric united at the bottom to form a pocket, one of said plies provided with an aperture beginning above the bottom of said pocket, and a garter-fabric engaging element and a hook member for connecting said element and loop and adapted detachably to engage said loop to suspend the garter therefrom, said hook member, in the normal operative position thereof, comprising a neck portion which extends vertically, a horizontal portion and a downwardly extendloop.
