Description

Jan. 12, 1932. CML MAGUlRE 1,840,631
COMBINATION FAUCET AND DRINKING FOUNTAIN Filed OCT.. 6, 1930 l Tram/fx Patented Jan. 12, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT ol-Flcliz CHARLES L. MAGUIRE, 0F YREKA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD EGLI, OF YREKA, CALIFORNIA COMBINATION FAUCET DRINKING FG'UNTAIN Application med October 6, 1930. Serial No. 486,585.
This 'invention relates to a combination faucet and drinking foundation, the prime object of which is to provide a fountain simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object is to provide a drinking fountain and faucet either part of which can be separately operated, but both the faucet and the drinking fountain cannot be simultaneously used.
Still another object is to provide a novel means of removing the overiiow from ad- I jacent the drinking fountain.
yOther objects, advantages, and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawings, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved combination faucet and drinking fountain.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, longitudinal, sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the valve disc rotated into positlon to pass the" water to the drinking fountain.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view of the valve shaft andthe controlling springs therefor.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 indica s the body of my faucet and drinking fountain which includes an integrally formed enlarged, rounded, central ortion 2, thetop 3 of which forms the drin g fountain, as will subsequently described. i
One end of the body 1 screws into a pipe, or the like, or it may be flanged or any other suitable coupling may be employed. The other end is curved 'downwardly into the usual faucet 4. A valve disc 5 is rotatably mounted in the enlarged section 2 and extends transversely thereof. A plate 6 is mounted upon, and closes one sideof the enlarged section 2, and this plate gives access to the disc 5 and permits of its insertion and removal from the body of the faucet. The disc 5 may be flanged at both sides as at 7 7 so as to make a more effective seal against the sides of the body.
-A shaft 8 protrudes from the disc 5 and extends through the side of the enlargement 2 opposite to the plate 6. A handle 9 is secured to the'outer end of the shaft 8 so that the disc 5 may be rotated. vA large port 10 is drilled or coredthrough the disc 5 and this port carries the Water into the faucet 4 when it is aligned with the faucet passage 11, as shown in Figure 2. A second smaller bore or duct 12 extends through the disc 5 and this duct is for the purpose of conducting the water to the fountain port 13 inthe top of the central section 2. The port 12, when it is aligned with the pressure side of the passage 11, as shown 1n Figure 3 will permit water to flow out of the port 13.
The disc 5 is limited in its rotation so that the bores 10-12 are y properly aligned by means of a lug 14 which extends from the bottom of the disc 5. An arcuate recess l5 is formed in the body land the lug 14 extends into this recess, the Walls of which form a stop for the lug, and thus the rotation of the disc is limited.
A When the faucet and drinking fountain are both to be shut off, the disc 5 is rotated so that a blank face is presented to the pressure side of the passage 11.. Y
To effectively drain the water which passes out of the drinking port 13, I provide an annular wall 16, which wall extends around the top 3 and serves to catch the water. A drain port 17 in the top 3 and within the wall 16 extends to a recess 18 in the body. When the bore 12 is rotated into the position shown in Figure 3, the bore 10 will extend from the recess 18 to the recess 15, thus conveying the water from the first named recess to the last named recess. v
A bleed hole 19 in the bottom of the body 1 permits the Water to drain from the recess 15 into a catch basin. drain pipe, or the like.
In order that the disc 5 may always automatically return' to closed or shut off position, Lprovide a pair of leaf springs 20-21 which bear against either side of the squared shaft 8, as shown in Figure 5. When this shaft is rotated to move either of the bores 10-12 into o erative position, the springs 20 or 21 will flexed and when pressure is removed from the handle 9, these springs of said bores extending from the first named will return the shaft 8 to such a position that the disc 5 will close the passage 11.
Having described my invention, I claim: l. A combination faucet and drinking fountain comprising a body, a faucet formed on one end of the body, an enlargement in the body, a valve disc rotatably mounted and seated in the body, said disc having two ports extending therethrough, said enlargement having a fountain opening in the top thereof, one of said ports being adapted to extend to the fountain opening, and the other of said ports being adapted to extend to the faucet, said body having an arcuate recess formed therein and a lug depending from said disc into the arcuate recess, the ends of said recess forming stops for the lug whereby the rotation of the disc is limited, an annular wall on the body surrounding said fountain port, a drain recess, a hole extending from within .said wall to the drain recess, one of said ports extending fromthe drain recess to the first named arcuate recess when the fountain is in use.
2. A combination faucet and drinking fountain comprising a body, a faucet at one end of the body, an enlargement in the body, a disc rotatably mounted in the enlargement, a cap secured to the body and enclosing the disc, a shaft extending from the disc out of the body, a handle on the shaft, said disc having two bores extending therethrough, a. fountain port in the top of the enlargement, one of said bores adapted to extend from a supply passage of the body to said port, and the other bore 'adapted to extend from the said supply passage to the faucet, meansAv limiting the rotation of said disc and spring means engaging the shaft whereby said disc isgurged into position to shut off the water to the faucet and fountain.
v3. A combination faucet and drinking fountain comprising a body, a faucet at one end of the body, an enlargement in the body, a disc rotatably mounted in the enlargement, a cap secured to the body and enclosing the disc, a shaft extending from the disc out of the body, a handle on the shaft, said disc having two bores extending therethrough, a fountain port in the top of the enlargement, one of said bores adapted to extend from a. supply passage of the body to said port, and the other bore adapted to extend from the said supply passage to the faucet, means limiting thev rotation of said disc andspring means engaging the shaft whereby said disc is urged into position to-shut 0E the water to thefaucet and fountain, an annular wall extending around the fountain port, a drain hole through the body inside of the Wall, a. drain recess into which the drain hole extends, a recess in the bottom of the body, one
recess to the last named recess when the fountain is in operation, and a bleed hole extending from the last named recess.
In testimony whereof, I afx my signature.
