Description

J. J. CARROLL PACKING ELEMENT Jan. 5, 1932.
Filed Marh 8, 1928 INVENTOR 702. 6b/'fail ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 5, 1932 PATENT onirica y JOHN J. CARROLL, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA,
ASSIGNOR TO DIXIE JUTE BAGGING COR- PORATION, NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA PACKING ELEMENT Application l'ed March 8,
My invention relates to packing elements and more particularly to an improved pipe cailring packing for use by plumbers.
The usual jute packing usedheretofore by Uplumbers has been found undersirable and wasteful dueto its tensile Jfragility. To overcome this objection many types of larger, harder fibre which detract from the value of the packing', have been employed. n
With these objections in mind it is the all important object of this invention to provide a relatively soft packing element having requisite tensile strength to withstand eXcessive pressure to which it is subjected when in use.
. More specifically the invention provides a longitudinal packing element formed oi jute in which a relatively hard coreortightly spun center is incorporated to produce a -stout article. Y
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in. mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construe tions and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: f v

twistedk together by any suitable means to produce the completed article.
In practice it has been found that the combination of jute sliver-s and core, in addition to producing an all vegetable iibre packing, coact to give a maximum strength and durability which is necessary for calking the fibrous strands twisted together, each of saidy strands comprising a core of tightly spun vegetable slivers having a plurality of similar vegetable slivers loosely twisted therearound to form a` strandV of appreciable thickness, said tightlyk spun cores serving to impart tensile strength to the packing without detracting j from the compressible qualities thereof.
Signed at N orfolkin the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, this 27th day of February, 1928.. A
JOHN J. CARROLL.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2 2 of Figure l and taken on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the invention in detail a longitudinal flexible packing element 5 composed` of aV plurality of spirally wound jute strands l0 is provided. In practice any desired number of strands may be employed depending upon the desired diameter of the` packing.
To strengthen each of the strands 10 a relatively hard core strand l5 is incorporated in each of the same. Each of the core strands is ay tightly spun vegetable fibre body', prefer.` ably jute, of sutiicient density asto give the..
strands a maximum tensile strength.
in order Vto form each of the strands l0 ark Y plurality of jute slivers with one of the4 cores .f
