Description

Dec. 17; 1929. E. BOUCHARD 1,739,822
MATCH BOX Filed Nov. 8. 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet l 7 y am,
- Attorneys Patented Dec. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES EDGAR BOUCHARD, OF QUEBEC, QUEBEC, CANADA MATCH izox Application filed November 8, 1927. Serial No. 231,930.
The present invention relates to improvements in the construction of match books and has for its primary object to provide a book of this character arranged so that the extraction 5 of a match will cause ignition thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a match book which may be conveniently and quickly constructed at a comparatively small cost.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a match book of the above type which will be compact and durable of construction and eflicient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like 2 reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the match book in completed operative arrangement;
Figure 2 is a plan of the unfolded blank from which the book is formed;
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan showing the initial folding operation of the blank;
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 shows the blank in complete folded position and the manner of severing the matches from the blank;
Figure 7 is a transverse section taken through the structure shown in Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a perspective view illustrating the completed interior book structure Figure 9 is a perspective view of the exterior casing;
Figure 10 is a plan view of the assembled book and casing, and
Figure 11 is a transverse section through the assembled match book showing the method of extracting a match therefrom.
Referring to the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred 50 embodiment of the invention, the numeral 15 tion which is partly enclosed by an exterior casing section 16.
The magazine section of the book is preferably formed from a unitary sheet of material designated 17 in Figure 2, this sheet being of generally rectangular form and its length varying in accordance with the size of match book desired. In the initial formation of the interior magazine section, the upper longitudinal edge is cut by a suitable instrument to form'a series of uniformly spaced slits 18 extending transversely from the upper edge for a suitable length to form matches of proper size. The opposed lower longitudinal edge is coated with a suitable abrasive material 19 adapted to form a friction surface for ignition of the matches.
Alternate strips 20, arranged between the slits 18, are separated in opposed angular positions by means of a bar 21 threaded through the strips to properly space the same. The ends of the strips 20 are then dipped into a suitable head forming substance to form the ignitible match heads 22.
The upper slitted portion of the sheet 17 is then folded over in doubled position on to the intermediate portion and the opposed bottom edge is likewise folded so that the abrasive material Will be doubled over on the same side as the match strips, as clearly illustrated in Figures t and 5. The intermediate portion of the sheet is then folded on the intermediate longitudinal folding lines 23 and 24:, as indicated in Figure 7, so as to form a U-shaped body whereby the doubled abrasive strip will be resiliently forced against the intermediate portions of the match strips. The match heads 22 will be disposed below the abrasive strip 19 so that extraction of the matches will cause the heads to frictionally engage the abrasive material to ignite the heads.
The upper folded portion of the body is then cut longitudinally to sever the connection of the strips 20 with the continuous back structure 25 of the body sheet, as illustrated in Figure 6, so that the match strips 20 will be severed from the sheet to provide compressed individual separable units. This construction forms a durable magazine member which is then inserted into the rectangular shaped casing 16.
The casing 16 is formed to cover the lower folded portion of the magazine so as to tight- 5 1y compress the lower rolled portion against the intermediate sections of the matches, preventing accidental d splacement of the, matches. from they magazine.
Thus, the match holding structure embod- 10 ies a folded sheet of material, including a back port-ion 25 and a forward folded portion 26, provided at its upper edge with an inwardly directed rolled edge 27 coated With abrasive material directed inwardly and in 15 contact With the intermediate portions of the severed matches. lik rolled edge 27 Will be firmly pressed against the matches to securely retain the same in position by the. exterior casing-16.. 2m n use,v hen an. ind vidual match is. rap d ly extracted from the book, the head Will fric-V tionally engage the coated folded edge 2'1 and will be ignited by the friction caused thereby. Thins, the headset themat h s. l be dur bly 5;; protected in the book and the matches automatically ignited upon extraction therefronn It is, to be understood that; the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred xample f he same, 3a; and that various changes as to the shape, size, and arrangement of pa ts. may be esorted: to Without departing from the, spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim,
Having thus described my invention, I claim :1 I
A combined match box and igniter, com.- prising a rectangular piece of pliable material equally proportionated and divided in o a number of matches, an inwardly protruding 4m fold formed on the lower edge of the, box, a coating of abrasive material arranged on the interior face of the said foldto secure the matches in place and toy ignite said matches upon withdrawal from the folded section. 4a; In Witness; whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
