Patented Dec. 17, 192% UNETED STATES PATENT OFFEE WALTER R. SCHLAGE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO SCHLAGE LOCK 00., OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA DOOR LATCH Application filed June 18,
This invention relate to door latches of the type illustrated in my (to-pending appli- CHlloh Plllillfll Door latch filed April 18, 1928, Serial Number 270,815, and especially to a reversible latch bolt, which permits installation of a door latch in right or left hand doors, as the case may be.
The object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of door latches, to provide a rerersil'ile latch bolt and guide plate and further to provide a connection between the latch bolt and a retractor mechanism, where by r versal of the latch bolt may be effected without opening the lock, or in any way disturhing or re-arranging the mechanism.
The invention is shown by Way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the latch bolt unit,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the latch bolt actuating unit, i
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the retractor crank arm,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the anchor plate,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view-of the latch bolt and the outer end of the retractor link,
Fig. 6 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the door lock, showing the installation in a door, said section also showing a portion of the door in section,
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of a door and the door-latch, showing it installed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly to Figs. 1. 2, 6, 7, A indicates a door latch actuating unit, and B. a bolt latch unit. The bolt latch actuating unit is identical tothe bolt latch actuating unit shown inmyco-pending application already referred to. Briefly, it consists of a cylinder, 2, in which is mounted a cylinder plug 3, provided with the usual tumblers. The cylinder 2 carries an escutch con plate 4,.and it is also provided with a 1928. Serial No. 286,078.
pair of lugs 5, 5 which supports a pair of post members 6 and 7, the outer ends of which are drilled and tapped to receive securing screws 6 and 7, hereinafter to be described.
The latch bolt actuating unit otherwise includes a spindle bar 8, which is secured to the cam 9 of the cylinder plug in any suitable manner. The spindle 8 is rotated when a key is inserted in the cylinder, as indicated at 10, see Fig. 7, or it may be rotated by means of an inner knob, as indicated at 11. This knob is journalled in an inner. escutcheon plate-12, which is secured to the inner face of the door by means of the securin screws 6' and 7. The shank of the inner ob 11 is recessed to receive the inner end of the s indie bar 8, and the spindle bar may thus be rotated either by the key actuated mechanism, or by means of the inner knob.
In preparing a door for the reception of a door latch such as here illustrated, it is only necessary to drill or bore one hole transversely through the door, as indicated at C, and asecond hole through the edge of the door, as indicated at D. The hole C is covered b the escutcheon plates 4 and 12 when the door atch is installed, while the hole D is closed by a guide plate 14 hereinafter to be described. The escutcheon plates 4 and 12, together with the latch bolt actuating mechanism carried thereby are secured by means .of the posts 6 and 7, and the securin screws 6 and 7' while the guide plate 14 is secured by means of screws 15 in the usual manner.
The feature forming the subject matter of the present application is more particularly related to the latch bolt unit shown in Figs. 1, 6 and 7. This unit consistsof an elongated cylindrical housing B, to the outer end of which is attached a guide plate 14. The inner end is closed by an end plate 16, and this is reinforced by means of a pair of plates 17. Extending inwardly from the end lates 16 and 17 is an anchor plate 18, this anc or plate being riveted or otherwise secured thereto. 90
The plate is provided with a perforation 19, at its inner end and with a notch 20 at its outer end. The post 7 passes through the perforation 19 and the post 6 passes through the notch 20 when the two units of the door latch are assembled in the door, as shown in Fig. 7. The anchor plate connects the two units, and furthermore maintains the connected parts of the mechanism in proper working position.
The latch bolt actuating unit B is provided with a latch bolt 21, see Figs. 5, 6 and 7. This is provided with a flat face 22 on one side, and an inclined face 23 on the opposite side. Secured to the inner end of the latch bolt, as by a threaded connection such as shown at 24, is a cylindrical extension 25, on which is formed a pair of interspaced collars 26 and 27. A collar or washer 28 is interposed between the inner end of the latch bolt and the cylindrical extension 25, and this collar, together with the collar 26, is snugly fitted to the interior surface of the cylindrical housing B, and as such form guides for the latch bolt when it is retracted and extended. The cylindrical extension 25 is cored out to receive helically compressed spring 30, this spring being positioned as shown in Fig. 6, normally exerting outward pressure, and as such maintains the latch bolt in an extended position.
The end plates 16 and 17 are slotted as indicated at 32, see Figs. 1 and 6, and as such form a guide opening for a, retractor link, generally indicated at 33, see Figs. 5 and 6. The inner end of this link is connected with a pin 34, carried by a roll back crank 35, this roll back crank being best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. The roll back crank is thus su ported by the spindle bar and it is rotated in unison with the same when knob or key actuated.
The forward end of the retractor link 33 is hook shaped, as indicated at 36. It straddles the inner collar 27, and as such forms a universal connection which permits reversal of the latch bolt, which will hereinafter be described.
By referring to Figs. 1 and-6, it will be noted that an auxiliary guide plate 14 is secured to the rear side of the guide plate 14 and that an annular flange is formed between the auxiliary plate 14 and the outer end of the housing B. A swivel connection is thus formed which permits the guide plates 14 and 14 to be rotated with relation to the housing B. The latch bolt which projects to the guide plates may also be rotated within the cylinder B, in unison therewith, as the guide flanges 26 and 28 are circular, and so is the flange 27. The guide plate and the latch bolt may thus be reversed to fit right or left hand doors, and reversal may be effected without opening or disconnecting the mechanism, as the hook 36 on the inner end of the retractor link cannot disengage the flange orcollar 27, no matter how much the latch bolt and guide plate are rotated.
\Vhile the reversible latch bolt and guide plate are here shown as being connected with a specificform of retractor and actuating mechanism, it is obvious that it may be applied to door latches of substantially any character, as long as a universal connection is provided between the retractor and the inner end of the latch bolt.
While other features of the present invention have been more or less specifically illustrated, I wish it understood that various changes may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, similarly that the materials and finishes of the several parts employed may be such as the manufacturer may decide, or varying conditions or uses may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a door latch, a latch bolt, a guide plate through which the latch bolt extends, a latch bolt housing, and a swivel joint formed between the guide plate and the housing, said swivel joint permitting free rotation of the guide plate and the latch bolt with relation to the housing.
2. In a door latch a latch bolt, a guide plate through which the latch bolt extends, a latch bolt housing, an extension on the inner end of the latch bolt and within the housing, an annular collar on the inner end of said extension, a retractor link, a hook shaped connection between the collar and the retractor link, and a swivel joint formed between the housing and the guide plate.
3. In a door latch, a guide plate, an auxiliary guide plate secured on the rear side of the first named guide plate, an elongated cylindrical housing, a swivel joint formed between the outer end of the housing and the auxiliary guide plate, a latch bolt guided by the-housing and the guide plate, and extending through the guide plate, a retractor and a connection between the retractor and the latch bolt permitting rotation of the latch bolt and the guide plates with relation to the housing.
4. In a door latch, a guide plate, an auxiliary guide plate secured on the rear side of the first named guide plate, an elongated cylindrical housing, a swivel joint formed -mitted without disconnecting the retractor linkand the latch bolt.
5. In a door latch, a latch bolt, a housing enclosing the latch bolt, a guide plate, an auxiliary guide plate, said auxiliary guide plate having an opening formed therein to receive one end of the housing and a flange on the end of the housing adapted to be interposed between the face plate and the auxiliary face plate, said flange forming a swivel connection between the housing and the plates.
