Description

Dec. 10, 1929. F. D. GATCHELL 1,739,357
REFILLABLE BOTTLE FOR VENDING OIL Filed July 9, 1927 A M- /a INVENTOR.
F D. GATCHELL ATTORNEY,
Patented Dec 10, 1929 STATES PATENT OFFIQE REFILLABLE BOTTLE FOR VENDING OIL Application filed July 9, 1927. Serial No. 204,546.
1 filling empty .bottles.
The present invention provides a refillable bottle particularly adapted for use with such system and apparatus.
The preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of an oil display and vending bottle embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pouring spout.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 represents a transparent container or glass bottle of generally tubular form finally culminating in a neck having shoulders 6 and 7 with intermediate step portions 8 and 9 for cooperation with a closure member.
The closure member is in the form of a pouring spout which is usually constructed of metal and the details of which are shown in Fig. 2. The closure member is a tapered tubular element or nozzle 10 having a base or bottle connecting portion comprising concentrio step portions 11 and 12 with shoulders and a screw threaded area 13 to rigidly secure the closure member to the bottle. The nozzle portion has an oil discharge passage 14 normally closed by a gravity operated valve 15 operatively disposed with relation to a seat 16. An adjoining passage or air vent 17 facilitates the discharge of oil under proper conditions.
The side wall of the base of the closure 4 member is formed or provided with a filling opening 18 the rim of which is provided with one or more packing washers or gaskets 19 whereof the facing element, as shown in Fig. 4;, is provided with a radial recess or pocket 20 which is designed to cooperate with a projection, stop or guide on the filling nozzle to insure proper entry of same into filling position.
The opening 18 is normally closed by a ball check 21, under the solicitation of a spring 22, the ball and spring being mounted in a housing 23. Under proper conditions and with a specially designed filling nozzle, such as disclosed in the application hereinbefore referred to, the valve or ball check 21 is designed to be unseated and to be held in such relation by the filling nozzle while the latter is functioning.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A closure for removable attachment to bottles designed to provide a filling and pouring attachment, comprising a nozzle-like body formed to provide a discharge passage extending lengthwise the body and opening through the end thereof, the body being also formed with a valved inlet passage opening through the side of the body, said passage opening downwardly within the body and being closed against the discharge passage.
2. A closure for bottles, including a nozzlelike body designed for removable attachment to the bottle to provide a pouring and filling attachment, said body being formed with a discharge passage extending lengthwise the body and opening through the end thereof.
an inlet opening in the side of the body below the discharge passage, the interior of the body immediately below the discharge passage being provided with a wall transverse the body commensurate with the transverse dimension of the discharge passage and an end wall depending from the transverse wall, said walls defining an inlet passage closed against the outlet passage, and a springpressed valve cooperating with the inlet opening.
3. A bottle closure in the form of a nozzle to be removably connected to the bottle and provide a combined filling and pouring attachment for the bottle, the interior of the nozzle being provided with a transverse wall connected at one end to the nozzle and spaced from the nozzle wall at the opposite end, a wall depending from the transverse wall and providing a pouring passage between it and the nozzle well, said Walls defining a downwardly-opening inlet passage, the nozzle Wall having an inlet opening in line vvith such passage, the nozzle being formed with a discharge passage immediately above the transverse Wall and oiiset from the pouring passage, said discharge passage extending lengthwise the nozzle and opening through the end thereof, and an air vent in line With the pouring passage.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FREDERICK D'. GATGHELL.
