Serial nofz r s'eie This invention relates to shoe finishing machines and has for an object the provision of a quick-change plate whereby the trimming knives customarily used on shoe finishing machines may be changed much more the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations-of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth inthe claims. v Referring to the drawings wherein similar reference characters denotev similar parts throughout Y I Figure 1' is a longitudinal, sectional View of a trimming knife held in position upon its mandrel by one of the improvedquickchange plates of my invention.

the plate All of the embodiments of the improved quick-change plate of my invention shown Figure 8 is a front elevation of the plate:
in the drawings and described herein are intended for use to removably retain a cutting knife 11 0f the type ordinarily used for triniing shoe soles-and heelsy against a shoulder 12 upon a collar 13 which is slidabl-y mounted upon the mandrel or main shaft14 of a shoe finishing machine, A sp ring gm under tension betwecn a portion of the collar lgfand a collar 17 rigid with the shaft 14-;urges the collar 13 and itsshoulder lg toward the end o the haf aedap ura ity pf nae integralwith the shoulder 12;- are adapted to extend between the plates; 19 of the knife 11 as clearly shown in- Figures 1 4 and 7. v

In the embodimentshown lfiiEiQilhQs 11, 2
and 3theplate 21 comprisejs a threaded portion 22 for the receptiofn'of whichjthe end of the shaft 14 is drilled centrally and threaded as at- 28. comple'mentarily to thethreaded portion22'.- An enlarged head- 2-4 is'provided upon the end of the threaded portion 22; the diameterof this headpireferablyba ing larger than'the diameter of the kiiife 11' so thata-guiding shoulder 26 isprovided to assist in properly holdingthe shoe sole or other article being trim-med against the revolving trimming; knife 11.- An annular shoulder 27 upjon-theyinner face ofthehead 24 is adapted to enter the central aperture 28 of the cutting knife 11 to retain-the' two in concentric alignment? and an annular shoulder 29 1011 the'outer face-of; the head 24 is provided witli kn11rling- ,31 to permit the 7 quick-change plate to be positioned and refront elevation of the plate of moved without the use of any tools.-
YVh'ile the operation of trimming shoe soles is being carried out itis frequently necessary to; chafnge the cutterll f oronfeof different s ns, W enimp ov d q i kc a g p at i .emr oyi'ed fo r taining; th cutter 11 in position uponits mandrel 14 this substitution of" cutters 11 may be carried out wi e-u mo t xped t n s ply y P at n h v l-m of one h a in the k r shoulder 29 and turning. the plate 21 the proper direction to remove the threaded portion 22 from the threaded portion 23 of the mandrel. The knife 11 may then be slipped from-the end of the shaft and replaced byunder considerable pressure of time which will make the employment of my quickchangeplate especially desirable.
In Figures 4, 5 and 6 a modification of my quick-change plate is shown. The head 36 is provided with a central aperture 37 which is threaded to be received upon the outer end 38 of a screw 39. The inner end 41 of the screw 39 is of smaller diameter than the outer end 38 and is threaded with preferably the conventional threads to 'make it receivable within the threaded bore 23 of the mandrel 14. When this embodiment is used it is intended that the screw'39 shall be positioned in the bore 23 of the mandrel 14 first, a screw driver slot 42 being provided in the outer end of the screw 39 for this purpose. Vhen the screw 39 has been so positioned the head 36 may readily be attached or detached therefrom in precisely the same way as that em ployed when operating the embodiment previously described.
In Figures 7 and 8 another modification is 1 shown in which the head 46 is provided with a smaller threaded central aperture 47. A
jscrew 48l1aving the same size threads moved therefrom in the same manner as that throughout itslength is intended to be in-- serted into the threadedaperture 23 of the j mandrel 14, after which the head 46 may be expeditiously positioned thereon and redescribed in connection-with the other embodiments. 1
-I claim: p
