Description

HANDLE MEMBER FOR TOOLS Filed Nov. 2, 1927 INVENTOR Patented Nov. 26, 1929 UNITEE STTES sic HANDLE MEMBER FOR TOOLS Application filed November 2, 1927. Serial No. 230,480.
This invention relates to handle members for tools-of various kinds and classes and par ticularly for comparatively large tools wherein the handle member is disposed angularly with reference to the body of the tool; and the object of the invention is to provide means whereby the handle member may be moved into .a position substantially parallel to the plane of the tool, and yet retained in engagement with the tool; a further object being to provide means for moving the handle member at right angles to the tool in the operation of collapsing or folding said handle member for shipment or other purposes; a further object being to provide means whereby a quick movement of the handle member with reference to the body of the tool is provided in the operation of moving the handle member into operative and inoperative positions; and with theseand other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, eficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which lthe separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view through a handle made according to my invention and illustrating one method of its use; and,
Fig. 2 is aside view of the handle member shown in Fig. 1 in a folded position.
In the drawing, 1 have shown for the purpose of illustrating one use of my invention, a part of the body portion 5 of a hawk, which may be of any preferred constructlon, such for example as the body of the hawk disclosed in a companion application filed of equal date herewith and bearing Serial Number 230,479, in which application, my 1mproved handle construction is also disclosed. However, it will be understood that the body portion 5 may representa'tool of any kind or class.
In the accompanying drawing, the handle member 6 consists of a substantially tubular body, the bore 7 of which is provided substantially centrally thereof with a collar 8 held in position by a set screw 9 or in any other desired manner. The collar 8 is internally threaded as seen at 10 to cooperate with threaded portions 11 and 12 on a rod 13. The threaded portions 11 and 12 are in spaced relation, forming a blank or unthreaded portion 1 1 on said rod, and the upper end of the rod 13 is forked as seen at 15 to receive the tongue end 16 of a pin 17, and a pivot pin 18 pivot-ally couples the rod and pin 17 together. The pin 17 may be secured to or constitute a part of the body 5 of the tool or as illustrated, may have a head 19 engaging a recess 20 in said body5 for coupling separate parts 21 and 22 of the body together.
The handle member 6, by virtue of the structure above described, may extend angularly with referenceto the tool .body 5, as seen in Fig. 1, and held in firm engagement by the action of the sleeve 8 on the threaded portion 11 of the rod 13. Whenever desired, the handle member may be moved into parallel relation with reference to the tool body, or into a position at right angles to the pin 17 as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing, by disengaging the threaded portion 11 of the rod with the sleeve 8, and extendingthe handle member longitudinally of the rod 13 along the non-threaded portion 14 in order to bring the upper end of the handle member below the pivot pin 18, which permits the rod 13 to swing on said pivot into angular relation with reference to the pin 17.
lVith my improved construction, it will be understood that the handle member 6 is retain-ed: at all times in connection with the tool body or with the pin 17. For packing, shipment and other purposes, the handle member may be moved into position shown in Fig. 2 in a very effective manner, and as quickly moved into operative position as seen in Fig. 1, for the use of the tool which is in the form of a hawk in the construction shown.
It will beunderstood that my inventionis not necessarily limited to the specific use of the handle member herein shown and described, nor am I necessarily limited to the details of construction herein set out, and various other changesin andmodifications of the structure herein disclosed may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
It will be apparent that the handle member may be constructed of any desired material, such for example as wood, fibre, rubber or metal, and may be formed in accordance with any suitable method, andthe construction and shape of the handle member will be made to suit the particular tool in connec tion with which it is employed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'1. A handle member for tools, said handle member having an elongated bore within which is a reduced and comparatively short threaded bore, a rod having adjacent the outer end thereof, a threaded portion adapted to engage said threaded bore in securing a handle member to the body of a tool, a head on the inner end of said rod, a non-threaded portion on said rod intermediate said head and first named threaded portion, permitting free, longitudinal movement of the handle with reference to said rod on said non-threaded portion, a coupling member movably connected with the outer end of said rod, said handle member and rod being movable into a position at right angles to the coupling member in one position-thereof, and the inner head end of said rod being threaded to pass through the threaded bore of the handle.
2. A handle member for tools, said handle member having an elongated bore within which is a reduced and comparatively short threaded bore, a rod having adjacent the outer end thereof, a threaded portion adapted to engage said threaded bore in securing a handle member to the body of a tool, a head on the inner end of said rod, a non-threaded portion on said rod intermediate said head and first named threaded portion, permitting free, longitudinal movement of the handle with reference to said rod on said non-threaded portion, a coupling member movably connected with the outerend of said rod, said handle member and rod being movable into a position at right angles to the coupling member in one position thereof, the inner head end of said rod being threaded to pass through the threaded bore of the handle, and said threaded bore being formed by a sleeve mount- 7 ed in the bore of the'handle.
