Description

Nov. 19, 1929. .J.-H. BARGESSYER 1,736,692
LUBRICATING DEVICE Filed Feb. 20, 1928 20 l 15 Z2 Z5 ATTOR N EY WITNESS:
Patented Nov. 19, 1929 UNITED STATES JOHN H. BARGESSER, F MCKEES ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA LUBRICATING DEVICE Application filed February 20, 1928.
This invention relates to lubricating devices for use in connection with .a swingingly mounted member, such as porch swings and the like, an object being to provide means for supplying lubricant at the points of engagement between the hanger hooks or eyes, and the supporting hooks of the swing chains, so as to eliminate objectionable noise and reduce friction and wear.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of means of the above character which are simple in construction, efficient in use, and may form a permanent part of the hangers or hooks, or may be in the nature of an attachment.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, il-
lustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation showing a swing with the invention applied.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the lubricant container.
Figure 4 is a like view of one of the chain carried hooks.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing a slightly different form of the invention.
Figure 6 is an elevation partly in section showing a further modified form of the in vention.
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawing in detail where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown in connection with a swing 10 which is hung from a suitable support 11 through the medium of chains 12 and hanger elements 13.
These hanger elements may be in the form of either hooks or eyes which are adapted to be engaged by hooks 14 carried by the chains 12.
In order to eliminate the rubbing or squeaking noises frequently experienced in Serial No. 255,746. 1
the use of swings supported in this manner, the present invention provides means for lubricating the hanger element 13 and the hook 14 at their points of engagement. In Figures 1 to 4 of the drawing, this is accom-. plished by providing a container 15, which is adapted to contain hard grease or other lubricant and which is engaged by the hook 14. For this purpose, the hook 14 is provided intermendiate its ends with an offset upwardly extending portion which includes parallel arms 16 and 17. The arm 16..is connectedto the shank 17 of the hook by means of a rightangled portion 18, while the arm 17 carries a hook 19 which is adapted to engage through the hanger element 13.
The arms 16 and 17 have a clamping engagement with one wall of the container 15 and the latter is provided with a notch 20 at this point to receive the bight 21 whichconnects the arms. The bottom of the container is provided with a spring arm 22 whose free end carries .a hook-shaped extremity 23 which engages the rightangular portion 18 of the hook 14. This acts to. force the bight portion 21 into the notch 20 and to hold the container 15 in place.
In Figure 5 of the drawing, the hanger element 13 includes a cup-shaped container 24, while the hook 25 which engages this hanger element is provided with opposed hook-shaped arms 26 for engagement over the edge of the lubricant container 24.
In Figures 6 and 7 there is illustrated a further modified form of the invention in ,1 which the container 27 is rectangular in plan and V-shaped in transverse section. This container is provided with an opening for the passage of a hanger element 28 which is shown in the form of a lag bolt, the open-v ing being surrounded by a boss 29. At the bottom of the opening is a recess 30 which receives the head 31 of the lag bolt. In-
stead'of a hook, this form of the invention utilizes a looped member 32 whose opposite ends are provided with inwardly extending hooks 33 which engage over the walls of the container 27 with the bills of the hooks positioned within the angle at the bottom of the container. A hearing is thus provided upon which the bills of the hooks may rock.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions, and minor details of construction and the right is 5 herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A lubricating device comprising in combination with a hanger element, a supporting hook swingingly engaged therewith and v a lubricant container located at the point of engagement of the hook with the hanger element.
2. A lubricating device comprising in combination a transversely V-shaped container, a hanger element extending through said container for engagement with a supi 2 porting structure, a looped member, and inwardly extending extremities provided at the opposite ends of the looped member and receivable within the angular bottom of the V-shaped container, whereby the looped member will be swingingly supported.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
JOHN H. BARGESSER.
