Description

R'. B. HOUGHTON. CooJking Stove.
Patented Aug." 25, 1840.
" ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN B. HOUGHTON, OF OLARKSON, NElV YORK.
FRANKLIN COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,734, dated August 25, 1840.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, REUBEN B. HOUGI-L- ToN, of Glarkson, Monroe count-y, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Franklin Cookin -Stoves, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawing of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure l, is a perspective view of the stove taken from a position opposite one of the corners. Fig. 2, is a vertical section at the dotted line m a" of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the figures.
This Franklin cooking stove resembles generally a stove of this description in use except in certain particulars which will be hereafter noted.
A is the hearth plate; B the oven around which is formed a flue C leading into D the collar; E, the fire place, and F the boiler holes.
The improvement consists in arranging aturning grate G in the Franklin fire place on a horizontal transverse axle H turned by a crank I outside the Franklin in order to bring the fire, when required for culinary purposes from the front of the Franklin fire place to the back of it and nearer to the boilers and oven by simply turning the crank which reverses the position of the grate bringing that part of it which formed the bottom into the position of the part which formed the back and which will now in turn form the bottom while the first mentioned part which formed the bottom will form the front.
The drawing represents the grate in a position to sustain the fire in the front of the Franklin fire place; the dotted lines represent what would be its position when the fire is carriedto the back of the Franklin.
A damper K is arranged in the upper part of the Franklin for changing the draft.
Also another damper L in the top flue where it enters the collar for changing the draft. This damper K is represented open and the other L as shut which will cause the smoke and heat to pass around theoven in the direction of the arrows. By opening this damper the smoke, &c., will pass directly into the flue. The damper in the upper part of the Franklin being closed and the grate turned back the smoke, &c., will pass directly into the flue either over or under the oven according to the position of the damper next the flue. -The grate is made right angled with parallel bars arranged so as to leave spaces between them whose axle passes transversely through the grate atits angle. The bars nearest the hearth are turned up at their ends at right angles to prevent the fuel from rolling off when these bars are in a horizontal position as represented. The damper K is fixed to a hori zontal turning axle passed through the side of the Franklin directly over the grate and is turned by hand. The damperL is fixed to a similar kind of axle passed through the side of the stove at the angle of the even near the flue and is also turned by hand.
A vertical plate P is placed between the grate and the oven which forms the back of the fire place when the grate is turned back and also part of the flue on between it and the oven in front of which it is placed.
hat I claim as my invention and which I desire to secure py Letters Patent consists in- The arrangement of the turning grate G for changing the position of the fire in combination with the vertical plate P and drum pers K L for changing the draft as before described.
