IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR GROOVING CURTAIN-ROLLERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,490, dated February 15,1876; application filed December 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. MILLER, of the city of Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Grooving Curtain-Rollers, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.-

My invention relates to a machine designed for the manufacture of that class of curt-ain- I the process of forming the grooves and corresponding securing-bars in the class of rollers hereinbefore named at one and the same operation, so that the material removed from the body of the roller in forming the groove will produce a complete securing-bar, adapted to secure thecurtain fabric without any additional labor, aswill be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved machine.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in each of the figures. A represents the stationary bed of the machine, provided in its upper surface with a semicircular recess for the reception of the curtain-roller. a is a stop or abutment, formed on the rear end of the bed A, for placing the end of the curtain-roller against the same. B is the cutter-frame or stock, sliding upon the bed A, and provided in its lower surface with a semicircular recess for riding over the roller resting upon the bed A. The frame or stock B is held in contact with the bed A by two guide plates or hooks, b, engaging with their inwardlybent lower ends in longitudinal grooves 0, formed in the sides of the bed A. D represents the cutter, adjustabl y secured in the stock B. It is provided'at the front with a narrow knife, '5, for cutting a narrow slit or groove in the surface of the roller, and in the rear of the knife 0' with a tubular knife, j, arranged lower than the knife *a', so as to produce a cylindrical cut, whereby a cylindrical groove is cut in the roller, and the portion cut out of face of the roller, so as to produce a straight cut.

By the above-described means the groove and fastening-bar are produced by a single cut, thereby rendering the operation extremely simple, and saving the time and labor required for fitting a bar into the groove.

Previous to my invention it has been customary in making rollers of the description to which my invention pertains, by sawing o1 milling out the groove, and then by a subsequent operation upon another piece of material, forming a securing-bar of corresponding shape, to be surrounded by'the curtain fabric, and placed within the groove. My invention is designed to overcome any disadvantages which may result from this process, and to produce the groove and securing-bar at one and the same time by a smooth clean out, thereby securing accuracy of fit, economy in the manufacture, and ready securement of the parts together.,

I claim as my invention 1. The cutter D, composed of the knife 1' and the tubular entterj, the knife 1' arranged centrally, and in advance of the tubular cutter, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.

2. In combination with the slide-block B,

cut away to receive one-half of the roller, and

the bed A cut away to reoeive the other half of the roller, and provided with grooves c, the cutter D, and guide-hooks b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3, The process herein dese'rihed of forming the grooves and securing-bars of curtain-rollers at one and the same operation, and so that the material removed to produce the groove will form the securing-bar, substantially as set forth.
