Description

Oct. 22, 1929. B. KRASNOFF 1,732,398
ARTIFICIAL DENTURE Filed Feb. 20, 1928 INVENTOR fierzzard Kraszwff ATTORNEYS Patented Get. 22, 1929 Ea TA'fES BERNARD KRASNC-FF, OF BROOKLYN, NEVJ YORK ARTIFICIAL DENTURE Application filed February 20, 1928. Serial No. 255,799.
My invention relates to means for retaining artificial dentures, such as removable plates and bridge Work, in place in the mouth, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efficient and comfortable device which serves to supplement the plate or bridge straddling the gum, in retaining the same in place, and which may be readily manipulated to permit of the removal of the denture.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified which is attached to the bridge or plate and extends beyond the same in engagement with the gum for retaining the device in place.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which the supplemental retaining means serves to exert a resilient or yielding pressure on the gum beyond the plate.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which a gum engaging extension or tongue conforms to the contour of the surface of the gum to effect a comfortable extended surface engagement therewith.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which the member retaining the device in place extends outwardly in opposite directions from the front portion of the device and resiliently or yieldingly engages the gum beyond the plate.
Other objects will in part be obvious, and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel features of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front view of one form of device constructed according to and embodying my said invention, the same being shown applied to the gum;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawing, I have illustrated the denture 10 as applied to the upper gum A. The denture consists of the plate 12 of greater height at the rear than at front straddling the gum and having the artificial teeth 14 set therein. The denture is adapted to replace ccrtain of the intermediate natural teeth without being anchored to the contiguous natural teeth remaining in place.
The supplemental means for retaining the denture in place comprises a member 16 which extends upwardly from the reduced front portion 18 of the plate 12, although the same may be attached thereto as a separate piece.
The tongues or extensions 20 and 22 conform in contour with the contour of the surface of the gum with which they engage, and the same are curved to extend over the bulging portions of the gum, as indicated at G, into the hollow or recessed portion thereof, as indicated at D. The contour of the tongues 20 and 22, is obtained from the impressions taken of the jaw in the same man nor that the contour of the plate is obtained.
The flexible member 16 is maintained resiliently or yieldingly in engagement with the gum A by a spring 24, preferably of wire formation, secured at one end to the portion 18 and extending over the tongue or branch 20. The pressure of the spring 2 1 imposed on the portion 20 is distributed uniformly thereover and causes the portion 20 to bear 1 on the gum uniformly throughout without causing discomfort to the user.
The denture 10 may be readily placed in position and removed by drawing back the portion 20 against the tension of the spring thereof. When the portion 20 is release-d upon placing the denture in place, the member 16, engaging over the ridge C of the gum and extending into the recess D thereof, securely retains the denture in place, exerts? ing a gentle and evenly distributed spring pressure over the surface of the gum, and providing an efficient holding device which may be worn with comfort. The subject matter of my invention disclosed herein and not claimed is disclosed and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 255,800 filed February 20, 1928.
1 claim:
1. A device of the character described com- 1.
name hereto.
prising a gum engaging channel member having a front portion of reduced height, and a yieldable retaining member extending from the front portion of said channel member and including gum engaging branches extending circumferentially of the exposed portion of the gum beyond the confines of said front portion.
2. A device of the character described com prising a gum engaging channel member having a front portion of reduced height throughout and a yieldable retaining member extending from said front portion and including gum engaging branches extending circumferentially of the exposed portion of the gum beyond the confines of said front portion in spaced relation to the edge thereof.
3. A device of the character described comprising a gum engaging channel member having a front portion of reduced height, a retaining member extending from said front portion and including gum engaging branches extending circumferentially of the exposed portion of the gum beyond the confines of said front portion, and resilient means engaging said member.
4. A device of the character described comprising a gum engaging channel member having a front portion of reduced height serving to expose a portion of the natural gum, a yieldable member connected to said front portion and including branches extending in opposite directions circumferentially of the gum beyond the confines of the front portion in spaced relation to the edge thereof, anda spring attached adjacent to the base of said yieldable member and extending along the outer face of certain of said branches to press the same against the gum.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my BERNARD KRASNOFF.
