would, of course, be wasteful of this material, is a disagreeable task.
An object of my invention is to provide a strainer and deodorant ordisinfectant holder 29 that supports the deodorant or disinfectant without exposure to contact with adventitious articles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the'above indicated type which permits cleaning the apparatus without disturbing'the deodorant, and in which the deodorant may be easily removed or renewed.
Further objects and features of the inven- 30 tion are to provide a strainer and deodorant support that enables the urinal, or other apparatus, to drain completely, and that may be easily installed.
With these and other objects in view, which will more clearly appear in the following description, the invention comprises the strainer and deodorant holder described and set forth in the following specification and claims.
The various features of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings,in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a strainer and deodorant holder embodying a preferred form of my invention, and a vertical section of the outlet and adjacent portions of a urinal, or similar apparatus, showing the position of the device when installed.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the strainer and deodorant holder.
also throwing away the deodorant, which 1928. Serial No. 270,609.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the strainer and deodorant holder.
Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sectional views, on a reduced scale, of modified forms of a strainer and deodorant holder embodyingmy invention. i
In my invention the deodorant is supported in a support or holding means that is mounted in the urinal outlet. This support is foraminous so that it can retain the deodorant while permitting liquid to pass into the outlet. The deodorantis'covered and shielded from contact with articles in the urinal by means of a strainer, preferably of a dome-like shape, which is detachable or removable from the deodorant supporting means. This strainer is, however, so constructed that deodorant bodies may be inserted therethrough and placed on the deodorant support without removing the strainer.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings, the deodorant material is supported on a foraminous plate or screen 11 that spans the area of a supporting member 12. The sup porting member 12 is provided with a cylindrical portion 13 which is adapted to engage and lit the inner surface of an outlet 14 of a urinal. The lower part of the cylindrical portion 13 is provided with spacedvertical slits 15, giving this portion a resiliency that enables it to be easily inserted and held in the outlet 14. Above the cylindrical portion 13 an outwardly extending flange 16 is formed on the member 12,; which rests on a step or shoulder 17 formedby a recess 18 in the upper edge of the outlet 14. At the outer edge of the flange 16,'the supporting member extends upwardly in an enlarged, cylindrical wall 19, and thence in'a flange 20, which supports the plate 11, to a cylindrical ring portion 21 adjacent the side wall of the recess 18.
The plate 11 and deodorant 10 are covered by a dome shaped strainer member '22,'having a number of openings23 forthe passageof liquids, The lower edge of the member 22 is enlarged to form a flange 2 1, that seats on the upper edge of the cylindrical ring portion 21, and an enclosing ring 25 that en circles the portion 21. The strainer member 22 is fastened to the ring portion 21 by means of indentations 26 that engage angle depressions 27 from the top of the ring 21 and form a bayonet joint fastening for the strainer member. Thus, by turning the strainer memher it is locked to the supporting member, or unlocked for removal. To enable the deodorant bodies lOto be placed on the plate 11 without removing the strainer member22, an opening 28 is provided at the top of the latter, through which the deodorant material may be introduced by means of a funnel, or other means, as indicated in Fig. 2.
As the openings 23 are situated somewhat above the level of the bottom 29 of the urinal, number of holes 30 are provided in the flange 16 and cylindrical wall 19 to permit liquid to drain from the urinal into the recess 18 and through the holes 30 into the cylindrical part 13 of the member 12, and thenceinto the outlet 14;.
It will thus be evident that by my invention the deodorant material is shielded from porting member may be'employed in various "types of outlets. As illustrated in Fig. i, in cases where the outlet is provided with inter- 'nal lugs 31, a foraminous deodorant supporting plate 32, of sheet metal and of a diameter to span the mouth of the outlet, may be secured to the lugs 31 by means of screws 33. The late 32 is provided with an upright =perip eral flange 34 provided with'angular depressions 35 to receive the indented depressions 26 of the strainer or cap 22, which is similar to'that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
For Wide outlets, such as shown in Fig. 5, a
'for'aminous deodorant supporting plate 36 is supported overthe outlet 14 by means of a downwardly extending peripheral flange 37,
and an outwardly extending flat flange 38,
'whichrests'in a shallow recess 39 at the edge 'of the outlet 14, and is'secured therein by screws 10. The depending cylindrical flange 371s provided with angle recesses 41 for securing the cap22 by a bayonet joint, and with drain openings 42'similar in function to the openings 30 of Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
As changes of construction could be made within the scope of my invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying draw ings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
cylindrical wall for insertion into and engagement with the inner surface of an outlet pipe, and having at its upper end a pair of successive enlargements in the lower of said enlargements having drain openings, a supporting screen in the upper of said enlargements, and a dome having a base removably mounted on the upper end of said holding member and provided with perforations.
2. A device of the type described which comprises a base member having slotted cylindrical Walls to grip the inner surface of an outlet opening and having its uper end sections of successively enlarged diameter, the smaller of said enlargements having drain inlets, a "supporting screen spanning the larger of said portions of enlarged diameter, and
cover dome removablyengagingand supported on the upper part of said base, said cover having draln'openmgs'and an opening for the insertion of deodorants.
3. A device of the type described which comprises a strainer plate and supporting means adapted to span an outlet of the type c'lescribech means for securing said plate in position across an outlet, a perforated dome on said strainer and supporting means, said dome hav ing an opening for the introduction of deodorant bodies onto said strainer means,
and means for detachably securing said dome to saidstrainer and supporting means.
4. A device of the type described which comprises a strainer and supporting means adapted to span an outletof the type described, means for securing: said strainer and supporting means inposition across an outlet, said strainer and supporting means having an annular ridge, 'a perforated dome on said strainer and supporting means having its lower edge encircling said ridge, said ridge having drain openings, said dome-having an opening for the introduction 'of deodorant bodies onto said strainer, and means for securing the lower edge portion of said dome to said ridge.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
MILTON MEYER.
