Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE GEORGE K. Eo F, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,007, dated February 1, 1876; application filed January 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEOR E K. HoFF, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a.-
new and Improved Folding Bench or Table, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 representsa side elevation; Fig. 2, an end view; Fig. 3, a bottom view, partly in section, of my improved folding stool or bench, shown in position for use; and Figs. 4 and 5 are, respectively, side and end views of the same folded up.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts. v
My invention relates to a simple, strong, and durable table, stool, or bench, that may be readily folded into small space for being more conveniently carried to the place of use, and which forms, when opened, a stool or bench of considerable strength.
The invention cmsists of two hinged symmetrical bench-sections,with hinged folding legs that are fitted by suitable recesses, and locked to a central stiffening-piece, which is hinged to one of the bench-sections.
In the drawing, A represents the main or seat part of the table, bench, or stool, which is made of two symmetrical sections, B, that are connected by strong countersunk hinges, so as to fold one onto the other. The seatsections B are supported on leg-sections G, that are hinged to each end of a seat-section B, and may be folded down onto the same. A central strengthening-piece, D, extends longitudinally along the under side of the seat, being hinged to one of the seat-sections. The sides of the legs that adjoin the central piece D are provided with recesses a, that enter corresponding recesses 11 of piece D, (see Fig. 4,) so that the adjoining leg-sections fit over the same, and may be locked by hooks d and eyes grigidly inlateral direction, the
interlocking of legs and centerpiece securing the rigid position of the legs in longitudinal direction. The center piece serves as a stiffening-brace to the leg-sections, and imparts,
furthermore, strength to the seat-sections as the-leg-sectious'alongside of the same, so that the bench takes up a small space, and may thus bereadily carried or transported to the place where the same is to be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a folding table, stool, or bench, the combination of the hinged and folding main or seat sections, with a central supportingpiece hinged to one of the sections, and extending throughout the entire length of the same, substantially in the manner and. for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the seat-sections and the hinged leg-sections, having'recesses, with the correspondinglyrecessed bottom brace .piece, whereby the parts are locked securely together, substantially in the manner described.
GEORGE K. HOFF.
