Rotatably mounted within the casing 10 is a toothed wheel 35, having a plurality of pins such as 36, positioned on one lateral face inspaced relation and arranged to be successively engaged by the hook-shaped pivoted element 33. The periphery of the wheel is provided with a plurality of teeth, which are in scraping contact with the surface of a flint 37. The flint 37 is held in intimate contact with the teeth of the wheel 35 by means of a spring 38, mounted within a recessed boss within the casing. A fuel tank 41 is positioned within the lighting compartment and is provided with a g'ooseneck tube 42 within which is a wick 43.' A cover or cap 44' is mounted on the inner face of the lid 28 in such position that when the lid is closed the cap 44 covers the wick 43 and effectively extinguishes the flame.

In operation, assuming that the fuel tank 41 has been supplied with a quantity offuel,

such as benzine or the like, and that ciga rettes have been placed within the storage compartment 22, the casing can be carried in the pocket or pocketbook without danger. When it is desired to light a cigarette the button 16 is depressed and the cover 11 automatically opens under the action of the springs 12. As the lid swin s open, the finger 23 carried thereby will e rotated in a counter-clockwise direction, 2, thus disengaging itself from lever 25. This action will not rotate the lever 25, which will continue to engage at its other end the lug 27, thus holding the cover 28 the bell-crank closed.

After one or more cigarettes-have been removed, the lid 11 is closed and the finger 23 then engages the curved end of the bellecrank lever 25, thereby rotatingit about its pivot 26 in a counter-clockwise direction. This releases the lug 27 and allows the cover 28 to swing open under the action of the springs 30. As it does so, the hooked end of the arm 33 engages'one of the pins 36 thereby rotating the toothed wheel 35 through a part of a revolution in counter-clockwise direction, as seen in Figs. 1 and4. As it does so, the teeth scrape the flint 37 and cause sparks to be produced, which strike the adjacent wick 43,

thus igniting it. The wick 43 is supplied with fuel from Within the tank 41.
