Description

Sept. 3, 1929. G. M. SMITH DTsHwAsHING ATTACHMENT Filed Aug. 4, 1927 Patented Sept. 3, 1929.
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. SMITH, OF OBERLIN, OHIO.
:DISHWASHING ATTACHMENT.
Application led August 4, 1927. Serial No. 210,610.
This invention relates to an attachment for hot water faucets for use in the cleansing of dishes; and its objects are to provide a simple t and relatively inexpensive device of the aforesaid character that may be quickly and conveniently attached to and detached from water faucets of prevailing types; thatis compact and is very neat of appearance; that is thoroughly sanitary in that it is easily kept l0 clean; that is adapted to be supplied with soap or other cleansing compound and which is so designed as to render the introduction of the soap or compound especiallyeasy; and which functions, when the water is turned on, to
- ldischarge two laterally spaced apart streams of relatively high pressure, one stream being of soapy water while the other is clear, so
that in the use of the device a person may hold dishes or other objects under the soapy stream and with the aid of a cloth or mop thoroughly wash the objects and 'immediately pass them under the stream of clear water and rinse them, after which they may be placed on a rack to drain or dry.
An embodiment of the invention wherein the foregoing objects are attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 shows the device in front elevation applied to a faucet; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device; Fig. 3 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section through the device and includes the spout of the faucet; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
According to the present preferred embodiment of the invention, the device comprises an elongated cylindrical casing 1 from about the middle of which rises a faucet connection 2 that opens into theinterior of the casing through a port or aperture 3. VA thimble 4 of rubber or other suitable packing material is clamped within the upper portion of the connection 2 by means of a ring 5 having an interiorly threaded peripheral flange 6 that is screwed onto the exteriorly threaded upper end of the connection. Extending from the diametric'ally opposite sides of the connection 2 are split pins 7 within one of which is preferably permanently clamped the end link of a chain 8, remote links of which'are adapted the casing, soap or other cleansing compound,
to be removably inserted within the split of the other pin for securing the attachment to a faucet, as I shall presently explain.
The interior of the casing 1 is divided into compartments A and B by a partition 10 that 1s in the vertical plane of the aperture 3 and preferably hasan extension 11 projecting a. distance through said aperture and into the throat of the connection 2. The partition 10 divides the aperture 3 so as to equalize the delivery of water to both compartments. The end of the casing containing compartment B is closed by a cap 12 that is preferably permanently attached to the casing, while a cap 13, that is similar in appearance to the cap 12, is removably applied to the opposite end of the casing, as by being screwed thereon. The compartments A and B are provided with outlets a and b, respectively, that are located on the underside and near the ends of the casing, the outlet b being somewhat smaller lthan outlet a for a purpose presently to be explained. A perforated plate 14 is connected to and spaced from the inner side of the cap 13 by pin 15, the spacing being such that when the cap is applied to the end of the casing, the plate 14 is disposed inwardly of the outlet a.
Then the cap 13 is removed and, by the same operation, the plate 14 withdrawn from S0 designated S, may be introduced into the compartment after which the cap is replaced to close said end and the soap or cleansing compound is confined between the partition 10 and the perforated plate 14, said plate constituting a strainer for preventing the soap or compound from passing out through or clogging `the outlet a. The device is then ready to be applied to a faucet F and this is accomplished by simply forcing the connection 2 upwardly over the spout of the faucet, the joint between said spout and connection being sealed or rendered liquid-tight by the pac-king thimble 4. The chain is then engaged over the faucet and the appropriate link is inserted within the split of the pin 7 opposite the one to which the anchored end of the chain is permanently fastened. Now
course, be clear for rinsingpurposes. By
making the outlet Z) in vcompa-rtmentQB slightly smaller than the outlet a, in compartment A, and by extending partitionlOupwardly a distance into the throat of the connection 2, the soapy solution in chamber A 'is nection projecting from the casing and comcompartment having an outlet remote from the lfaucet connection, one of the compartprevented from passing over into compartment B.
Having thus described myV invention, what I claim is v 1. A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising an elongated casing, arpartition substantially midway between the ends of the casing and dividing it into two compartments, a faucet connection on the casing in in the region of said partition andv communicating with both compartments, the compartments being otherwise independent of each other, each compartment having an outlet remote from the faucet connection, one of the compartments having a soap receiving opening, and a closure for said opening.
2. A dish washing attachment for faucets, comprising a casing, a partition dividing the casing into two compartments, a faucet con; nection rigid with the casing and communieating with both compartments, means for fastening said connection substantially rigidly to a faucet so that the faucet will constitute the sole support for the casing and sustain it in operative position, each compartment having an outlet remote from said partition, one of the compartments having a soap receiving opening and a closure for said opening.
3. A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising an elongated casing, a partition intermediate the ends of the casing dividing it into two compartments, a faucet connection on the casing adjacent said partition and communicating with both compartments,`
said compartments being otherwise independent of each other, each compartment` having an outlet remote from said partition,
i and a removable cap for closing one end of the casing.
1. A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising. a casing, a partition dividing the casing' into two compartments, al faucet conmunicating lwith both compartments, each ments having a soap lreceiving opening, a
rllhe water issuing from the outlet through the compartmentB- will, of.:
mentioned compartment.
6.\ A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising an elongated casing, a partition intermediate the 'ends of the casing dividing it into two compartments, a faucet connection rising from the casing adjacent said partition and communicating with both compartments, each compartment having an outlet near its outer end, a removable cap for closing one end of the casing, and a strainer insertable through said end.
7. A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising an elongated casing, a partition approximately midway between the ends of the casing dividing it into two compartments, a faucet connection rising from the casing adjacent said partition and communicating with bothcompartments, each compartment having anoutlet near its outer end, a removable cap for closing one end of the casing, and a strainer carried byv said cap.
8. A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising an elongated casing, a partition -intermediate the ends of the casing dividing it into two compartments, a faucet connection rising from the casing adjacent said partition and communicating with both compartments, each compartment having an outlet nea-r its outer end, a removable cap for closing one end of the casing, and al perforated plate carried by and spaced inwardly from said cap.
9. A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising an elongated casing closed at one end, a closure removably applied to the opposite end of the casing, a faucet connection rising from the casing intermediate its ends, said casing having an aperture through which its interior communicates with the interiorof said connection, a partition dividing the casing into two compartments and extending across said aperture, the casing having outlets on its underside near its ends, and a strainer insertable through the end of the casing to which the aforesaid closure is applied. l
10. A dish washing attachment for faucets comprising an elongated cylindrical casing closed at one end, a cap attached to the oppo- YV site end of the casing, a faucet'connection rising from the casing about midway from its ends, said casing having an aperture through from the inner side of the cap so as to be diswhich its interior communicates with the inposed inwardly of the adjacent one of the terior of said connection, a partition dividaforesaid outlets when the cap is applied to 10 ing the casing into two compartments and the casing.
5 extending across said aperture, the casing In testimony whereof, I hereunto afix my having outlets on its underside near its ends, signature. and a perforated plate carried by and spaced GEORGE M. SMITH.
