Application filed February This invention relates to abottle filling and capping machine, the general obj ect of the invention being to provide means for forcmg a bottle against a discharge spout of a tank, which action opens the spout and permits some of the contents of the tank to enter the bottle, after which the bottle is lowered which permits the spout to close.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement' o f the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended-claims.
In describing my invention in detail, refei'ence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and inwhich Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of p0rtioneof -a machine constructedy in accordance with this invention.

In these views, 1 indicates a part of a supporting frame which includes posts, one of which is shown at 2, which support the base 3 for the tank 4. The post 2 has a slot 6 which forms a guideway for a pin 7 carried by a head 8 which is slidably ounted in the hollow post 2 and connected to ya rod 9 which is adapted to be reciprocated by the movement of a pedal lever 10 which is pivoted to a part of the frame. A toothed sleeve 11 is slidably mounted on the front post 2 and a long sleeve f 12 is also slidably mounted on said post above the sleeve 11, this sleeve 12 also being provided with teeth 13 at its bottom for engaging the teeth 14of the sleeve 11. Theseteeth are of cam shape so that as the sleeve 12 is raised, the inclined edges of its teeth, leaving'the inclined ledges of the teeth of sleeve 11, will rotatel said sleeve 11 and cause it to ride up a 18, 1927. beveled projection 15 on a base part ofthe post 2 which normally engages a notch 16 in the bottom of the sleeve 11, said notch having a beveled wall. Then when theupper sleeve frees the lower slceve,said sleeve will return to its Yoriginal position under the action of gravity and then when its teeth are-engaged by the teeth of the upper sleeve as said upper sleeve drops under the action of gravity, the` said upper sleeve will be given a quarter revolution. Both sleeves are slotted, as at 17, to receive the ends of the pin 7, but the slot in the upper sleeve is short so that after the piny has been moved'a certain extent .by the pedal 4means, it will engage the upper end of the slot in the upper sleeve andthus raise said sleeve. A tubular guide 18 is connected with the lower sleeve and surrounds the lower part of the upper sleeve.
A pair of bottle carrying disks 19 and 2O are ad'ustably connected with the upper portion o the upper sleeve by the set screws 21 and the disk 19 is formed with a number of flanged recesses 22 in its periphery for rc ceiving the necks of bottles, such as shown at A, and the disk 20 is provided with a number of shallow recesses 23 which are arranged to receive parts of the necks of the bottles held in the recesses 22 of the disk 19 so that these two disks hold the bottles against movement.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that by depressing the foot pedal, the pin 7 will engage the upper sleeve, thus raisingthe same so that the bottley carrying disks arebraised and then as the pedal is depressed, the parts will descend and the engagement of the teeth of one sleeve with the teeth of the other sleeve will give the upper sleeve and the disks car-4 ried thereby a quarter revolution so as to i bring a new bottle under the filling means and to position the bottle just filled under the capping means.
Instead of having the parts operated by manual power, they can be operated by a motor, such as shown at 24 in Figure 8, the shaft of which is connected by the worm gearing 25 with a disk' 26 which engages a wheel 427 on the end of the rod 9 which carries the pin 7, the disk 26 having a recess 28 therein for receiving the wheel 27 so that the parts can drop the same as they would when the foot pedal has been released.
The filling means are constructed as follows:
A tube 29 is threaded in the bottom of the tank 4 and has inlet ports. 30 in its upper end throughwhich the contents of the tank can lpass, into? the tube. A vent pipe 31 passes through the tube and has an extension 31Kat its upper'4 end which extends above the tank. Alarg'e headed screw 32 holds a gasket 33 against the bottom of the tube 29, with its threaded shank 34 threaded in the bottom of the vent pipe 31.' Thus the vent pipe and tube are held in spaced relation with their lower ends closed. A packing member 35 is placed between the lower lends of th@ tube and pipe, and this member is so shaped that it leaves the liquid discharge port '36. of the pipe 29 free, while preventing liquid from-reaching the vent port 37 in said pipe 29. This member 35 has a port 38 therein for connecting the port 37 with a port 39 in the lower end of the vent pipe 31. By this means,'lluid from the tank can pass down the space between the tube 29 and pipe 31 and discharge through the port 36 into the bottle A, while the air in the bottle can escape through the ports 37, 38 and 39 into thevent pipe 31. A valve sleeve surrounds the lower part of the tube 29 and a spring 41, placed on the tube and sleeve, tends to hold the lower end of the sleeve yagainst the head 32 of the screw, thus closing the ports 36 and 37. The lower end `of the sleeve 40 also carries a ring-shaped member 42, preferably of resilient material, which acts as a seal for the bottle mouth when the bottle is being filled', and this member also acts as means for causing the bottle to move the valve sleeve upwardly to open the-ports when the bottle is infilling position.
Fromthe foregoing, it will be seen that as .the'bottle supporting means are raised, one
of the bottleswill engage the -member 42' with its mouth, thus lifting the valve sleeve 40 so that some of the liquid from the tank 4 can flow into the bottle from the discharge port 36 while the air is venting from the bottle through the ports 37, 38 and 39 into vthe vent pipe 31. Then as the bottle supporting means are lowered, the spring 41 will return the valve sleeve to lowered position and thus close the ports 36 and 37.y
As the'bottle supporting means move down. wardly, they will be given a qaurter turn as above described, so that the bottle just filled will be moved from'under the filling means and a new bottle willbe brought under the filling means so thatV as the supporting means are raised again, the new bottle will operate thefilling means. V

a plugin the lower end of the space between the two pipes, said plug having a beveled upper part with its low side arranged adjacnt a port in the first pipe so that this port is inl communication with the space between the two pipes and the high part of the plug having a port therein for placing the registering ports in communication with each other and a spring pressed valve for normall holding the ports in the first pipe closed, ut being moved to open position when a bottle is pressed against the discharge end of the dev1ce.l

A bottle filling machine comprising a tank, a liquid discharge pipe connected with the tank and depending therefrom, a vent pipe passing through the liquid pipe and spaced therefrom, a closure member detachably connected with the bottom of the vent pipe and closing the lower end of the space between thetwo pipes, said pipes having ports therein adjacent their lower ends, a port in the vent pipe being inv alignment with a port in the-liquid pipe, a plug in the lower end of the space between the two pipes, said plug leaving a port of the liquid pipe free and having a port therein which registers withthe ports which are in alignment with each other, a spring pressed member slidably arranged on the liquid pipe for closingthe ports therein and a valve carried by the member andadapted to engage the mouth of a bottle when a bottle is pressed against the device.
