GRATE BAR.

This invention relates to grate bar structures and to an improved process for the manufacture of the grate bars resulting in the production of an improved grate bar possessing important advantages in use and further allowing for economy of manufacture over the method of production as heretofore employed.
The grate bar structure of the present invention is of the type particularly adapted for use in locomotive fire boxes and the like and accordingly is of the sectional type provided with the depending shaker lug or shaker arm formed for connection with an operating mechanism whereby the grate bars are rocked upon their fulcrums. it is desirable that the shaker arms of grate bars of this type shall be rigidly and lirmly secured to the grate bar proper and it is the usual practice in the manufacture of this type of bar to form the grate bars with the arms as a unit structure but casting the bars and arms at one and the same time whereby they are an integral andl omogeneous whole. \Vhile possessing the desirable features and advantages of a united bar and arm structure, the grate bars so made of a single cast-- ing are expensive in making by reason of deep sand molds required for casting the arms integral with the bar-proper and moreover by reason of the more or less fragile nature of the cast iron or cast steel of which the grate bars are made they are liable to breakage of the arms during handling and shipping resulting in substantial losses.
1n accordance with the present invention I have overcome the aforesaid objectionable factor of liability to fracture, by forming the shaker arm portions of the grate bar separately and of a more ductile or malleable metal and forming the united structure by placing the shaker arm within the mold and casting the metal of the grate bar proper thereon whereby a rigidly united bar and arm structure is produced and wherein the latter portion is better adapted to withstand shocks to which it may be subjected in transit. My improved design further provides for obtaining an effective bond between the arm or lug member and the grate bar cast thereon and further of a form adapted to reduce the chilling effect of the arm on the grate bar metal during casting whereby an efi'ective mechanical bond is obtained. v

The improved grate bar sections, as shown, each comprise the longitudinally extending side bar members 11, intermediate longitudinally extending spaced bar members 2, connecting end portions 3-3 and intermediate transverse bridge portions 6; the side members and the bar members 2 being suitably spaced to provide longitudinal air passages 8-8 of the required area and opening vertically through the section to admit the required air supply. The upper surfaces of the members of the grate bar insofar as referred to are arranged in a common plane, thereby to provide a horizontal substantially fiat supporting surface for the fuel. At the respective end portions of the grate bar section and arranged centrally thereof, there are formed the usual bearing socket members 9 and 10 depending from the end portions or walls 3. symmetrically disposed at opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the grate bar,.the end portions are provided with the transverse openings 12 extending therethrough and afi'ording additional air passages. The grate bar section described may desirably be made of an alloy steel possessing special properties, such.
casting mold and casting the grate bar thereon with the upper portion of the arm embedded and surrounded by the metal of the bar. As here shown, the shaker arm 14 is so secured to the central portion of the bar by being embedded in the metal of the centralmost transverse bridge por'i For obtaining a successful mechanical bond adapted for firmly securing the arm in position, the arm may desirably be formed as here shown with its upper portion having its side surfaces cored out at 16 and 17 and with its opposite edge portions formed with the recesses or notches 18 to allow entry of the metal of the bar for locking of the arm in position. Also, and as shown, the upper portion of the bar may be provided with the centrally positioned aperture or orifice 19 allowing the cast metal of the grate bar to flow therethrough to add security to the structure.
"There is accordingly produced improved grate bar structure having the important advantage of a rigidly secured shaker arm of a relatively more ductile metal than the remainder of the bar, T he improved structure morevover allows of obtaining im portant advantages in manufacture in that the molding of the grate bars facilitated by the employment of more shallow sand molds which is permitted by employing lower or drag mold boxes having an aperture positioned to allow of the shaker arm to be positioned to depend therethrough.
l Vhile there is here shown an approved embodiment of the features of the present invention, it will be understood that varied modifications of form and arrangement may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. It is accordingly intended that all matter herein shall be interpreter illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, 1 claim: 1. A rate bar structure for locomotive fire boxes comprising a grate bar member composed of a plurality of longitudinally extending bars spaced to provide air passages therebetween and end wall members and intermediate bridge wall members connecting said bars and a shaker arm rigidly secured to the grate bar member, said shaker arm being formed of a relatively more ductile metal than that of the grate bar memher and being united thereto by casting of the grate bar member upon the arm whereby a portion of the arm is embedded within a connecting Wall portion of the grate bar and said embedded portion of the arm being formed with recessed portions providing for mechanical bonding with the bar.
2. A grate bar structure of the character described comprising a grate bar member and a shaker arm rigidly secured thereto, said shaker arm being formed with an upper securing portion of reduced section having openings therethrough and being of a relatively more ductile metal than that of the grate bar member and united therewi h by casting of the bar member upon the securing portion of the arm.
3. A grate bar structure of the character described comprising a grate bar member and a shaker arm rigidly secured thereto, said shaker arm being formed with an upper securing portion having recessed edge portions and a centrally disposed opening therethrough and being separately made of a relatively more ductile metal than that of the bar and united therewith by casting of the grate bar member upon the securing portion of arm.

As a new article of manufacture a grate bar structure comprising a grate bar member and a shaker arm, said shaker arm having its upper end portion formed with recesses adapted to be engaged by the metal of the grate bar for rigidly uniting the arm and bar members, said shaker arm being of a relatively more ductile metal than the bar member and united with the latter by casting of the bar member thereon with portions of the bar filling the recesses.
5. As a new article ofmanufacture, a grate bar structure comprising a grate bar member and ashaker arm, said shaker arm having an upper securing portion adapted to be embedded within the metal of the bar,
said securing portion being cored out to provide recesses for mechanical bonding and to reduce the section and said shaker arm being of a relatively more ductile metal than the bar member and united therewith by casting of the bar member thereon to the recesses with integral portions of the bar.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a grate bar structure comprising a grate bar member and a shaker arm, said shaker arm having its upper end port-ion formed with deformations adapted to be engaged by the metal of the grate bar for rigidly uniting the arm and bar members,said shaker arm being of a relatively more ductile metal than the bar member and mechanically bonded with the latter by casting ofthe bar member thereon in engagement with the deformations.
