This invention relates to fastening devices for articles, such as badges, ornaments, or articles of jewelry.
An object of the invention is to provide means for securing a badge or other article attaching means in position, without the use of solder, and thereby provide a simpler and more eiective securing means.v
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating the invention in connection with a badge.
Figure 2 is a rearview of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the badge is formed.
Figure 4 is a sectional view showing a slightly different form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank and safety catch illustrated in Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a badge which as shown in Figure 3, has extending from one end a projection 11, while a project-ion 12 extends from the opposite end.
The projection 11 is notched or bifurcated as shown at 13 and is provided with an opening 14, while the outer end of the projection l2 is shaped to provide a hook 15.
The projections 11 and 12 are bent as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings so as to extend substantially at rightangles from the rear face of the badge 10. A pin 16 has one of its ends passed through the opening 14 and its extremity bent substantially at rightangles as shown at 17 so as to engage the adjacent face of the badge 10. The pin is then looped as indicated at 18 so as to be positioned within the notch 13, while the free or pointed end of the pin is adapted for removable engagement by the hook 15 which forms a keeper for the pin.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the pin and its securing means and keeperV are arranged upon the badge without the use of solder and thus provide a much simpler and more effective means for holding the pin 192s. serial No. 285,977.
in place. The character of the pin and the manner of its engagement with the badge also adds to the spring action of said pin so that its free end will be more securely held within the keeper.
If desired, the projections l1zt and 12a may extend from the opposite end of a bar 19 and the bar may be riveted or otherwise secured to the badge or article 10a. The projections are then bent substantially at rightangles as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings and the pin 16 secured in the manner previously described. If desired, a safety latch 20 may be pivotally mounted upon the hook 15 so as to further guard against the accidental disengagement of the free end of the pin.
The latch 2O is constructed of a pair of spaced substantially U-shaped members which are connected as indicated at 20 and which have one of their ends pivotally attached to the hook so that when the guard is closed, one member will be positioned upon each side of the hook. The guard may be made of a single piece of material properly shaped and bent intermediate its ends at the point 20 above mentioned.
Extending from opposite sides of the projection 11i are retaining members 21, and these retaining members ,are adapted to be bent at rightangles to the bar so as to provide parallel members which prevent the pinl from swinging laterally when unhooked. Lugs 22 also ext/end from the bar 19 near each end thereof and serve to provide increased area for contact with the badge or other member to which it is attached.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is y 1. In an article of the character described, a projection carried by and extending substantially at right angles from one face of the article, said projection having` a notch in its outer end and an opening spaced inward from the notch, a pin positioned within the notch and passed through the opening with the extremity of one of its ends bearing against the adjacent face of the article and a keeper carried by and extending from the face of the article and spaced from the projection.
