INVENTOR iiiiit.
HRRAMOND D. BAUOT, F JERSEY GITY, NEW JERSEY.
HWPROVEMENT IN ClGARETTE-FRMERS.
Specification forming partei' Lettere Patent No. ilf'kb., dated January 18, 1876; application filed October 20,1875.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRAMOND D. BAoo'r, `of Jersey Git-y, county of Hudson and State `of New Jersey, have vinvented certain Improvements in Making Cigarettes, of which troduction ofthe tobacco in such manner that the inner tube havingthe funnel-shaped lnouth can be raised up and forced down for thepnrpose of tainping the thbacco direcil)r under the end ofthe said tube in to a compact mass, leaving a loose central core, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Figure l is an elevation used in the process. Fig'. 2 is a section ofthe sn me. Fig. 3 represents a cigarette filled with a section near one end; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section ot' the saine.
A represents a tube of the proper size for the interior ot' thel wrapperof the cigarette, and upon it is wrapped the paper or whatever is used the proper covering to inclose and hold the tobacco, and both are then inserted in a second tuloe or mold, as at B, which serves to support the paper or wrapper during,` the operation of iilling' and ramping the tobacco therein. When the three parts arc thus placed together the lower cud ofthe wrapper is folded over the end of the 4tube A, and pinched together, as shown at U, Fig. l, so as to `project out undel the exterior thereby7 held from rising with the interior tube of the devices as tube B, and be` in the process of tamping` the filling` therein.
The upper end 4of the taxnpingtubc'A is pro-V f vided Wit-ha funnel or hopper shaped mouth for the convenient reception of the cnt tobacco, and a sulicient quantity is placed therein to form the filling, and as it settles down to the bottom or lower end of the wrapper the tube A is raised up and forced down by hand in a series of short blows or tam ps, so as to press the tobacco that is directly under the end of the tube into a compact or irm mass around the wrapper; butin such a manner as to leave Vthe center comparativel.)v loose or unpacked,
so that the air and smoke may be drawn through freely1 or easily.
This difference in the packing of the filling is indicated at Figs. 3 and 4., where the sections are shown.
rlhe advantage of such au apparatus, and the method ofvusing the same in addition to that ot' making a nice evenly-shaped cigarette and one easil.)Y smoked, is that it may be placed in a case for convenient carrying in the pocket, and any one not skilled in the rolling or making of cigarettes ma5v easily and readily make their own.
I therefore claim- The combination of the outer tube B with the inner tube A, having the fnnnetshaped mouth, and constructed to be raised up and forced down for the purpose of tamp'ing the tobacco directly under the end of the sliding tube into a compact mass, leaving the loose central core, as and for the object specified.
