Description

Aug. 6,. 1929. G, THOMSSEN 1,723,260
SEALING DEVICE Filed Oct. 1, 1927 SEAL 1.9
fiz 5 z ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 6, 1929.
I UNITED STATES EDGAR G. THOMSSEN, OF WINONA, MINNESOTA.
SEALING DEVICE.
Application filed October 1, 1927. Serial No. 223,359.
My invention relates to scaling devices and refers particularly to devices of this charac ter suitable forapplication to containers hav ing a removable closure.
()ne of the objects of my invention is a de vice which will act to retain a closure within a container and which will also serve as a warning when the container has been opened after its original closure and sealing.
There is always a danger that closures, whether they be corks or hinged devices, may become dislodged during handling and shipment, thus causing a loss of the contents of the containers, and hence, some locking means for retaining the closure means in position is highly advantageous.
There is a further danger that the closure be opened, the contents of the containerremoved and the container filled with di tl'erent, or interior, contents, and hence, a. means warning of such a tampering 01": the container and its contents is most valuable.
A consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawings will show that the device of my invention possesses the above-mentioned, and other, valuable features.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating one form of the device of my invention, similar parts are designated by similar numerals.
Figure 1 is a front view of one form of my device attached to a container partly in section.
Figure 2 is aside view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top view 01 Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top view of my sealing device.
Figure 5 is a side view of my locking de-' vice.
The particular form of the deviceo'l. my invention, shown in the accompanying drawings with its application to a container closure, comprises the neck 10 of a hottle,or container, (not shown), having an extended concaved flange 11 around the upper portion thereof. said hinge having a plurality 01 re cesscs 12, 12. A cork 13 is positioned within the container neck 10.
A wire 1 cking member consists of the por tion 1 1 abutting upon the top of the cork 13, the two extended portions of the locking member being bent downwardly 15, 15, then .lownwardly and outwardly 16, 16 to be positioned under the recesses 12, 12 of the flange 11, the hooked extremities 17, 17 being positioned below and abutting upon thccoucavcd flange 11., to retain the cork 13 in position.
A pliable sealing member consisting of paper, tabric, or other suitable material, has a central member 18 and two extended wings, or extensions, 19, 19.
I prefer to have the ,aling member carry an adhesive upon one face thereof, but an adhesive can be applied when the device is placed in posit-ion, it desired.
The application of my device, ed, as follows:
The cork 13 is positioned within the neck 10 of abottle and the wire locking member placed. in position, as shown, the portion 11 abutting upon the top of the cork 13, the members 16, 16 being within the recesses 12, 10 and the hooks 17, 17 protruding into the concaved flange 11. The locking member thus holds the cork 13 firmly in position, and the latter can not be removed without springing the two members 16, 16 outwardly suiticiently to release the hooks 17, 17.
The port-ion 18 of the sealing member is placed over the wire 14 and the top of the cork 13 and adhesively attached thereto, the two wings 19, 19 are then bent downwardly over the wires 15, 15 and adhesively attached to the side 01 the cork 13.
In order to release the cork 13, when assembled as described, it is necessary to bend the wires of the locking meml'ier outwardly a sutlicient distance to tear the sealing members 19, 19, thus disclosing that the container has been open ed. 1
It will thus be seen that my device acts not only as a means tlor retaining a cork from accidental displacement, but also serves as a warning, or notice, when the container has been opened after its original sealing.
The portion 18 of the sealing member may be used for adverti sing, or such other printed notice as may be desired.
I do not limit myself to the applimtion of my device to liiottle neck flanges lmving recesses within which my lockin i'ucmbers may be positioned, as shown, as my device may be applied successfully to bottle neck flanges having no such recesses and in which my device is maintained in position by contact between its hooked extremities and the power portion of the concave neck flange.
I do not limit mys lf to the particular size, shape, number, arrangement, or material, of parts, as shown and described, as these illustratare given simply as a means for clearly describing the device of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a sealing device capable of attachment to a container having a. neck, in combination, a container, a neck to said container, a flange to said neck, a closure for said neck, a metallic locking member abutting upon said closure and locking beneath said flange and a pliable sealing member abutting upon and exterior of the locking member and attached adhesively to the top and sides ot the closure.
2. In a sealing device capable of attaclnnent to a container having a neck, in combination, a container, a neck to said container, a flange to said neck having a plurality of recesses therein, aclosure for said neck, a metallic looking member abutting upon the upper face of said closure, positioned within said recesses and locking beneath said flange and a pliable sealing member abutting upon and exterior of the locking member and attached adhesively to the top and sides of the closure.
3. In a sealing device ca vable of" attachment to a container having a neck, in combination, a container, a neck to said container, a flange to said neck, a cork Within said neck, a metallic locking member abutting upon the upper face of said cork locking beneath said flange and a pliable sealing member abutting upon and exterior of the locking member and attached adhesively to the top and sides of the cork.
4;. In a sealing device capable of attachment to a container having a neck, in combination, a container, at neck to said container, a flange to said neck having a plurality of recesses therein, a cork Within said neck, a metallic locking member abutting uponthe upper face of said cork, positioned within said recesses and locking beneath said flange and a pliable sealing member abutting upon and exterior or the locking member and attached adhesively to the top and sides of the cork.
51in a sealing device capable of attachment to a container having a neck, in combination, a con iner, a neck to said container, a flange to said neck, a cork Within said neck, a metallic lockin member abutting upon the upper face of said cork, locking beneath said flange, a paper sealing member abutting upon and exterior of the locking member and adhesively attached to the top and sides of the cork.
6. In a sealing device capable of attachment to a container having a neck, in combination, a container, a neck to saidcontainer, a flange to said neck having a plurality of recesses therein, a cork Within said neck, a metallic locking member abutting upon the upper face of said cork, positioned Within said recesses and locking beneath said flange, a paper sealing member abutting upon and exterior of the locking member and adhesively attached to the top and sides of the cork.
