IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR STEAMING FOOD FOR STOCK.

- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172.301, dated January 18, 1876; application filed December 15, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROMAIN DALLEY, of'

Quincy, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usetion-charnber, the sliding shutter under the fire-box, and connecting with the same, the boiler, steam-box, and perforated crate, as hereinafter more fully described.

To enable others to make and use my iinproved steaming apparatus, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings and the letters marked thereon.

For the purposes to which my invention is most applicable it is necessary that the apparatus should be portable, strong, and safe; so I make the fire-box or furnace A of light boileriron, with a grate, a, in the forward portion of it, over the ash-receptacle b, the furnace A being surrounded by an air-combustion chamber, B, the case or sheathing 0 being of sheet metal, there being slots or openings 0 c in the sides and rear end of the fire-box, to admit the flame and heat into the combustion-chamber B under the bottom of the boiler or pan D, which is attached to the steam-box E, that is provided with a cover, F, that fits closely, but is easily removed, as also the steam-box E and pan or boiler D. Into the steam-box E is fitted the semicircular crate G, or the perforated receptacle for steaming food for stock, it hanging on the ledges e e of the steam-box, so that the contents are kept above the boiling water, the steam and heat passing up the sides easily permeating the mass.

One of the most important features of my improved furnace is the sliding floor d, or bottom of the ash-pit b, by which the draft or any required amount of air is let in directly under the grate a, to force the flame and heat up to the bottom of the boiler D, thereby effecting much saving of fuel.

What I claim as my invention is The arrangement and combination of the furnace A, proyided with a sliding shutter, 01, under the grate a, and ash-pit b, the combustion-chamber B, surrounding thefire-box or furnace A, and connecting with the same, as

shown, the shallow pan or boiler D, steam-box E and cover F, and the removable semicircular perforated crate G, substantially in the manner herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
