'EZRA S. SMITH, OF ATTLEBOR-O', MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO B. F. SIMMONS CODE- IPANY, OIE ATTLEBOBO, MASSACHUSETTS, A CDPARTNERSHIP CONSISTING OF JOSEPH L. SWEET AND HARGLD E. SWEET.
COLLAR HOLDER.
This invention relates to collar holders of the type adapted releasably to grip the flaps of soft or semi-soft collars thereby to hold said flaps in the desired position with respect to the collar band and necktie. The
principal object of the invention is to provide a collar holder which is simple and economical to manufacture, durable in use and attractive in appearance; which has improved means for attaching together its two cooperating clamping bars against relative longitudinal movement without the employment of rivets or the like; and which affords at least two points of tensioned contact for frictionally gripping-each respective flap of the collar.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved col lar holder;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The collar holder comprises essentially a pair of clamping members, either or both of which may be formed of resilient metal, havingtheir corresponding ends normally disposed in spring-tensioned contacting relationship for yieldably gripping the respective collar flaps, the central portion of each member having a corresponding bend or bow in cooperating engagement, and a binding strap or band tightly embracing the abutting bowed portions, thereby to secure the clamping members together and particularly to prevent relative longitudinal movement thereof in relation to the band.
The clamping members preferably consist respectively of a front bar 4 having its ends 5, 5, bent rearwardly in curved bends 6, 6 and transversely corrugated as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and a rear bar or plate 7 of resilient material having its end portions 8,
partly in section 8 curved slightly to the rear and normally abutting the respective corrugated ends 5, 5 to provide at least two points of contact 9, 10 between each pair of clamping jaws. The substantially straight front bar 4 preferably has an upward bow 11 at its center, and the rear bar 7 has a corresponding central bend12 abutting and cooperating with the bend 11, when the parts are assembled, to
obviate possible endwise movement of the members with respect to each other and the connecting strap.
The bars 4 and 7 are rigidly connected together by means of a band or strap 13 which embraces the engaged central bends 11 and 12 and which preferably has opposed lips 14,14 rolled over the edges of the two bars and swaged beneath the lower bar 7, thereby firmly and permanently to retain the clamping members together. If desired, solder may be employed beneath the band 13 for additional security.
The use of the device is well understood; in applying the collar holder the flaps of the collar are passed between the yielding clamp jaws at the respective ends of the holder, the insertion of the fabric being facilitated by the rounded and curved ends of the bars 4 and 7 respectively, and the flaps are thus releasably held in position by the frictional contact of the resilient clamping members.
As indicated above, the'corrugated formation of the returned ends 5, 5 provides at least two longitudinally spaced, rounded points of contact at each end of the holder, thus affording a firm grip without injury to the fabric and thereby diminishing the possibility of accidental separation.
A collar holder constructed as above described is simple and compact of construction, economical to manufacture, and attractive in appearance when attached to the collar. While avoiding the use of connecting rivets or other penetrating fasteners, the clamping members are rigidly united against accidental separation or relative movement in a simple and unique manner. Without sacrifice of operative efficiency, the recommended construction admits of the employment of a relatively flat and stiff front bar which presents a pleasing straight-line, or it may be slightly curved, appearance in use, and which is unlikely to be deformed during handling.
I claim:
1. A collar holder comprising a front clamping member having a bowed central portion, substantially straight, fiat and inflexible elongate portions extending in opposite directions from the center, and end portions bent rearwardly beneath the elongateportions, a rear clamping member having a correspondingly bowed central portion in contact with the central bend of the front member and having end portions normally in yielding contact with said bent ends, and a binding member embracing said bowed portions and clenched under the rear member thereby to secure the members together and prevent relative longitudinal movement thereof.
2. A collar holder comprising a front clamping member having a bowed central portion, substantially straight, fiat and in.- fiexible elongate portions extending in opposite directions from the center, and end portions bent rearwardly beneath the elongate portions, said bent ends being transversely corrugated, a rear clamping member having a correspondingly bowed central portion in contact with the central bend of the front member and having end portions normally in yielding contact with said bent ends at two longitudinally spaced points, and a binding member embracing said bowed por I tions and clenched under the rear member thereby to secure the members together and prevent relative longitudinal movement thereof. p
3. A collar holder comprising elongate front and rear clamping members, the end portions of one of said members being returned between the two members and said returned portions being transversely corrugated, the respective end portions of the other member normally abutting said corrugated ends thereby to provide at least two longitudinally spaced, yielding contacts between each corresponding end of the saidmember, and means for securing the central portions of the two members together.
Signed by me at Attleboro, Massachusetts, this 27th day of September, 1928.
