My invention relates to improvements in toys, and it consists in the combinations,
' ordinary electric iron, but which is constructed differently and for a different purose. p A further object of my invention is to provide a toy of the type described which has a novel form of an imitation switch.
A further object of my invention is to provide a toy of the type described in which the switch may be secured to any fiat solid surface, such as a wall, woodwork, or the like.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy showing the switch secured to a wall, the switch being shown in section,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the iron, and
Figure 3 is a section substantially along the line 33 of Figure 1.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a toy having an iron portion A, a cord portion B, and a switch portion C. The iron portion A is provided with a body portion 1 of the form shown in Figure 1 and having an outwardly extending flange 2 integral there with and extending around the edge thereof. A bottom 3 is provided with an upwardly extending flange gripping portion 1 which is arranged to be bent around the outwardly extending flange 2 for securing the bottom 3 to the body portion 1. A handle 5 is secured to the body portion 1 by means of a handle-supporting member 6. A cord-retaining housing 7 is secured to the body portion 1 at 8, and to the handle-supporting member 6 at 9. The housing 7 is arranged to receive one end of a cord 10, the end of which is formed into a knot as at 11. The cord 10 may be constructed of any suitable material, but preferably a fabric covered rubber so that the cord may be made elastic.
The switch portion 0 is composed of a hollow casing 12 having elongated notches 13 in the walls thereof. A switch shaft l l is disposed in the notches 13 and is provided with a handle portion 15. A cam or switch wheel 16 is rigidly mounted upon the switch shaft 14 and is provided with raisedor en larged portions 17 A resilient cam-actuated member 18 is disposed in the casing12 and is provided with two substantially parallel arms 19 and 20. The arm 19 is provided with an elongated opening 21-, and the arm 20 is provided with anelongated slot .22 which are arranged to receive the cam 16.
A base 23 which is provided with a hollow port-ion 24 is rigidly secured to the casing 12 and the resilient cam-actuating member in turn rigidly secured to the casing. A cover 25 having an opening 26 is disposed upon the opened end of the casing 12 and rigidly secured in place by means of tongue portions 27 which extend therethrough and which are gripped in place. The free end of the cord 10 is passed through the opening 26 and is provided with a knot 28 for holding the cord in place.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the toy, the use thereof may be readily understood. Let us assume that the user wishes to go through the act of ironing a certain article which is disposed upon a table indicated at 29 and positioned near a wall 30. The switch or socket portion C may be secured to the wall 30 by forcing the base in close engagement with the wall and forcing the air out of the hollow portion 24. The force of the base 23 in engagement with the wall 30 will form a suction between the wall and the hollow portion 24 of the base, thus holding the base in engagement with the wall. By rotating the switch shaft 14, the user may presumably turn on the switch. The rotation of the switch shaft 14 will rotate the cam 16 and cause the enlarged portions 17 to force the arms 19 and 20 of the resilient member 18 outwardly until they are released by the portions 17. The releasing of the arms 19 and 20 will permit the arms to move inwardly into engagement with the more reduced portions of the cam 16, causing a sound similar to that of an ordinary switch when actuated. Furthermore the force of the resilient arms 19 and 20 will normally hold the cam against rotation.
The user assuming that the switch is now turned on may go through the act of ironing.
