Description

UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
JEREMIAH M. CROSBY, OF NORWALK, OHIO.
DOOR-BOLT.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 17,204, dated May 5, 1857.
To all 'whom t may coacem:
Beit known that I, JEREMIAI-I M. CROSBY, of Norwalk, county of Huron, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Door-Bolt; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the igures and let-ters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention is in making and. constructing a bolt, attached by a rod to an eccentric or cam, all placed within a case wherein it moves by the action of a spindle of a knob passing through the cam, in such a manner. that when the bolt is thrown outward intothe catch or jamb by the action of the spindle, the end of the rod where it is connected with the cam, falling below the center of the same, its further motion in that direction is prevented by the case, and thereby at the Same time prevents the return of the bolt and locks the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed i to describe its construction and operation.
I construct the bolt, in any of the known forms and apply to it a corresponding case, also attach or apply to it a rod, and cam or eccentric, knob and spindle, all of which can be made of any desired metal.
Figure (I) represents a Section ofthe door and bolt. Fig. (II) represents a section of the bolt when outward or locked. Fig. (III) represents a like section of the bolt and attachment-S unlocked.
(B, B,) is the bolt.
(C, O) is the ececntric or cam through which the spindle of the knob passes.
(R) is the rod or wire each end thereof bent at right angles so as to enter apertures and thereby easily connect the bolt (B) and cam (C).
(L) is the case within which the bolt and attachments move, made in two parts and fastened by means of a single screw or rivet, y
(K) is the knob cast with the spindle to move the cam.
(S) is the rose of the knob, made Somewhat concave, having an aperture in the center to slide on to the spindle.
(T) is the recess or slot made in the rim of the rose, to allow the pin (P) to pass down to, and through the spindle, to fasten the rose to the knob. Thereby in forming what I call and term, an eccentric bolt Its utility is readily seen in its simplicity, economy, and its easy application, also its being a lock bolt without any additional arrangements.
That I claim as my improven'lent and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the bolt, B, rod It and t-he cam or eccentric C, combined substantially as described for the purpose specified.

E. RINDGE.
