Description

c. BROWN July 2, 1929.
WATER GAUGE Original Filed April 9, 1926 Qrndxlus Bmwra/ ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS BROWN, OF TONKAWA, OKLAHOMA.
WATER GAUGE.
Application filed April 9, 1926, Serial No, 100,958.
This invention relates to devices for de termining the water level in steam boilers and has for an object the provision of a gauge or valve which may be operated to determine whether or not water within the boiler is at the proper level.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which is simple in construction, reliable in use, may be easily installed and will effectually prevent spraying of the boiler by escaping steam or water.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the use of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view partly in elevation.
Figure 3 is an end view of the body of the valve.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the body of the gauge or valve which is provided at one end with an extension 11. The extremity of this extension is exteriorly threaded for removable engagement with a threaded opening provided in a boiler 12 or other liquid container.
The body is provided with a substantially L-shaped passage 13 and one end of this passage opens into the boiler 12. The opposite or other end of the passage 13 is counterbored or enlarged as shown at 15 and has threadedly secured therein a sleeve or thimble 16. This sleeve or thimble is provided with an opening 17 which extends longitudinally therethrough and this opening provides a restricted outer end for the passage 13. The opening 18 is surrounded at its in ner end by a valve seat 18 which receives a valve 19, the latter being preferably of the gravity ball type.
Extending from the body 10 are spaced arms 20 between which is pivotally mounted as shown at 21, an operating lever 22. Extending from the lever 22 is a substantially Renewed November 23, 1928.
L-shaped arm 23 which operates within the restricted portion or opening 17 of the passage 13 and may be moved inward to unseat the valve 19. Movement in this direction is resisted by a spring 24 which is mounted upon a pin 25.
Normally, the parts are in the position illustrated in Figure 1 and by moving the arm 23 inward, the valve 19 may be unseated so that water may be permitted to flow through the passage 13 and the level of the water within the boiler determined.
If desired, the device may include an auxiliary valve 26 whose rod 27 extends through the body 10. The valve 26 is normally arranged in open position so that water may flow into the passage 13. The valve 26 may however be moved to closed position so as to shut water off from the passage in case of emergency, or, when adjusting or repairing the device.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A valve comprising a body having passage ways arranged at right angles to each other and disposed in communication, an extension formed with said body and being threaded for securing the body in connection with a fluid container in a manner whereby one of said passage ways extends at right angles to said container, a gravity operated ball in the other passage way, a thimble formed with an opening terminating in a seat for said ball and being threadedly secured in said body, a yieldingly resisted member including an L-shaped arm having a portion thereof passing through said opening for unseating said ball upon movement of the memher in one direction, a valve stem in the passage way disposed at right angles to the container, a valve on the stem and being disposed in said container to cooperate with a seat formed on the extension for controlling the flow of fluid to the respective passage ways.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CORNELIUS BROWN.
