This invention relates to bales or handles adapted for use upon receptacles or contamers.

An object of the invention comprehends means for holding the handle flush against the receptacle to facilitate shipping and storing of the receptacle within the approximate area occupied by the receptacle per se.

Another object of the invention contemplates locliing means adapted for detachable engagement with one end of the handle to prevent displacement thereof when the same is called into use.

More specifically stated the handle member is adapted. to be bent upon itself within the locking element precedent to carrying the receptacle.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the fol lowing novel features, and details of con struction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a receptacle.

The invention embodies a handle member adapted to be carried by a receptacle and to be flattened against one side thereof when stored and sl ped but which is adapted in be extended occupy the pa. ion as best illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing when the latter is called into use.

In carrying out the invention I provide an elongated flexible strip 11 soldered or otherwise secured as indicated at 12 upon the outer side of the receptacle.

A locking element in the nature of a plate member 13 carried upon the receptacle 10 provided with an elongated slotted portion 14-. adapted to receive the free end of the strip 11 therethrough. That portion of the plate member 13 having the elongated slot 1 1 is outwardly flared as indicated at 15 from the adjacent wall of the receptacle as illustrated in Figure l .of the drawing.

When the device is called into use, the strip 11 is pulled away from the adjacent wall of the-receptacle to occupy the position as best illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing, and the free end thereof is bent upon itself within the elongated slot l t in the plate member 13 and over and upon the flared portion 15 thereof. The receptacle may then be immediately manipulated to discharge or dispense the contents thereof.

For purposes of convenience in the manipulation of a receptacle in conjunction with the present invention, I have provided a handle portion 16 for the strip 11 and having inwardly turned edges 17 upon the side edges of the strip 11 to prevent the hands from becoming out.

It is noted, from the nature of the invention, that the same may be applied upon the various forms, designs or types of receptacles and the presence thereof will in no Way restrict the packing or shipping of receptacles equipped with the particular type of handle.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. In a handle, a flexible strip adapted to have one of its ends permanently attached to an article, a slotted plate adapted to be attached to said article to freely receive the opposite end of the strip, whereby the strip may" he :tlat against the article at ex tended with the free end of said strip shaped to provide a hook to engage the plate and form a handle.
