UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ROBERT SHERMAN AND ANTHONY R. LI'ISINGER, F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
AUTOMATIC OILING DEVICE.
Application filed July 7, 1927. Serial No. 204,025.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in oiling devices and aims to provide a device that is primarily, though not specifically adapted for use in the oiling of overhead shaftings, bearings, pulleys, etc. and this without requiring the operator to employ a step ladder or other elevating means. Furthermore the invention is so constructed that when the discharge end of the oil spout is engaged with the point to be oiled and a pull applied to the device the oil will be caused to automatically flow through the spout and thus lubricate the bearing, pulley, or other element being lubricated. By reason of such a structure there will be no lia bility of the operator slipping in a direction toward the shafting or belt which frequently results in injury to the workman.
The invention further aims to provide a device of this character that is relatively of simple construction and cheap to manufacture, but that is yet highly eificient in operation.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a view of the oiling device, the lubricant container being disposed in vertical section.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken substantially upon the line 22 of Figure 1 and looking downwardly in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section disclosing more clearly the oil inlet and discharge mechanism of the invention.
Figure 4 is a transverse section through the outlet pipe of the device which is associated with the discharge snout. said pipe being equipped with a normally closed check valve, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary section through the lubricant container for more clearly disclosing a means whereby the lid of the container is detachably secured thereon.
Now having particular reference to the drawings, our novel device consi. of a suitable lubricant container 5 open at its upper end and provided with a slip-type removable lid 6 that may be, and preferably is readily detachably secured to the container by reason of one or more spring fasteners 7, see Figure 5. The lid of the container is provided with an inlet 8 from which depends a sleeve 9 arranged over the lower end of which is i filter screen 10. The inlet opening is threaded for receiving a closure plug 11, see Figure 1.
Furthermore, tightly arranged within an opening of this lid 1s an internally threaded collar 12 within the lower end of which is threaded the upper closed end of a depending sleeve 13 within the lower end of which is threaded a cylinder 14 coextensive with said sleeve. Slidable through the closed end of the sleeve 13 is a plunger-15 which plunger is also slidable through a bore in the plug 16 threaded within the upper end of the lid collar 12.
Secured to the lower end of the plunger 15 is a circular head 17 to opposed points of which are depending and pivotally connected links 18-18. Opposed points of the sleeve 13 are formed with longitudinally extending slots 19-19 to permit the inner yoked end 20 of a rocking lever 21 to be pivoted to the lower ends ofsaid links, see F igures 1 and 3. This lever 21 is pivoted intermediate its ends as at 22 to a hanger 23 that depends from the container lid 6.
Arranged upon the lower end of the plunger 15 that extends to the cylinder 14 is a suitable piston 24 mounted for reciprocation within said cylinder. Arranged upon the plunger directly above the piston 24 is a plate 25 that has rest upon the upper end of the cylinder and that supports the lower end of an expansible coil spring 26 which spring surrounds the plunger 15 between the member 25 and the head 17, said spring serving to maintain the plunger 15 and piston 24 raised.
Threaded upon the lower end of the cylinder 14 is a key fitting 27, the vertical portion of which is coextensive with the cylinder 14 and sleeve 13. The lower end of the vertical portion of said fitting is formed internally with a circular flange to provide a valve seat 28 while the inner end of said vertical portion of the fitting is threaded for receiving a plug 29 from which depends a pin 30 slidable upon which is a valve 31 for rest upon the seat provided-by the flange 28, an expansible coil spring 32 siiirrounding said pin between the plug 29 and said valve as clearly disclosed in Figure 3.
The horizontal portion of this fitting 27 COHSU'W'ftGd substantially identical with the vertical portion thereof and in such a manner as to provide at its inner end a valve seat 33, the outer end thereof being threaded for receiving a plug 34 that also carries an inwardly projecting pin 35 upon the inner end of which is slidable a valve 36 for engagement with the seat 33. In this instance also an expansible coil spring 37 surrounds the pin between the valve 86 and plug 3%. As clearly disclosed 1n Figure 1 the outer ends of the plugs 29 and'34l are equipped with angular heads 29 and 34' to permit of the turning of the same into and out of the fitting. Furthermore the periphery of each plug is formed With notches as disclosed in Figure 4 to permit lubricant to be passed therethrough.
Threaded upon the end of the horizontal portion of the fitting 27 is an elbow fitting 37, the outer end of which extends upwardly and to which is attachedthe lower end of an elongated nozzle pipe 38 that extends through an opening in the lid of the container and that is provided at its upper end with a ver tically slidable goose neck 39. Pivoted to the outer end of the rocking lever 21. is the lower end of a vertically extending rod 40 that has sliding engagement with an opening in the container lid 6 and thatis pivotally attached at its upper end to a'finger' 41 secured to the lower end of the goose neck 89.
Obviously the container, 5 is to be charged with lubricant and when the discharge end,
neck 39. On'the down stroke of the piston 24 the valve 31 will be positively closed, while the pressure of the fluid against the valve 36 will cause the opening of the valve to permit the fluid to pass thereby. As soon as the pull is released the piston 2 L will be returned by the spring 26 and'on its upstroke the lubricant will be drawn into the cylinder let by reason of'the valve 31 opening, the suction of the piston closing the valve 36.
In order that the lubricant may be discharged by hand, the projecting'end otthe plunger 15 is equipped with a handle 42.
It will thus be seen that we have provided a highly novel, simple and'etficiently operatfrom the container, a nozzle slidahle on the spent, a pump device associated with the container, a rocker arm, a connection between the nozzle and one end of? the rocker arm, the
opposite end of the arm being connected to the pump so that the movement of the nozzle on the spout will transmit motion to the pump for forcing liquid from the container through the snout.
2. in a lubricati device of the character described, a container, a spout projecting from'the container, a pump device operable to force fluid from the container through the spout, a goose neck shaped nozzle slid able on the outer end of the spout, a rocker arm on the container, a connection between the inner end of the nozzle and one end ol the rocker arm, the opposite end of the arm being operably connected with the pump device, so that an inward movement ot the nozzle will actuate the pump to "force iluid vfrom 'he container through the spout.
3. In a lubricating device of the character described, a container, a spout projecting from the container, a pump barrel mounted on said container, a plunger operable within the barrel, means for retainingthe plunger 1n retracted position, a nozzle slidable on the spout, a rocker arm mounted on the container.
and a connection between the said nozzle and one end of the arm, the opposite end 'ol 'tho arm being associated with the plunger so that an inward movement oi the nozzle will actuate the plunger to discharge fluid from the container through said spout.
In testimony whereot we ailix our ign:1-- tures.
GEORGE ROBERT Sl lERh'l l KN. ANTHONY R. LITSINGER.
