MANUFACTURING CIGARS.

This invention refers broadly to the manufacture of cigars, and it-is particularly 1ntended to pg'ovide means of manufacturing superior grades of cigars by avoiding the difliculties heretofore encountered by providing the cigar with a high grade outer wrapper or cover. In the manufacture of cigars as generally practiced the tobacco is enclosed in the so called cigar-roll com prising the filler and the cover and this roll is then surrounded by the so called wrapping leaf or wrapper. The positioning of the wrapper, which in most cases has to be effected by manual operation, is a very tedious and expensive class of work, requiring a high degree of dexterity and skill; and inasmuch as the wrappers are made from the best and healthiest leaves, any waste occurring in this operation can only. be used as a filler and, therefore, cause loss to the manufacturer. I Even where application of the wrapper is effected by machinery losses of material in applying the valuable wrapping leaves can not be avoided. Nor has it been possible to simplify and facilitate the operation of applying the wrapper by utilizing the so called tobacco-paper obtained. as an artificial product.

These difliculties are overcome by my invention which makes it possible to provide the cigars with a durable but comparatively inexpensive wrapper which may be applied either by machinery or by hand. According to this invention tobacco leaves which, both as regards their color and odor, are suitable for use as wrapping leaves, but which need not be any particularly selected leaves, are very'finely subdivided and are suspended in this condition in a liquid containing a suitable combustible bindlng agent, the more or less pasty material thus, obtained being applied to the cigar-roll.

The accompanying drawing is a view partly inelevation and partly in longitudinal section of a cigar having a wrapper produced according to my invention.

As a liquid suitable for the purpose of this inventlon I may employ, for example, a

. varnish which will not affect the palatability and the burning of the cigar, such as a solution of a cellulose-ester, preferably the acetyl-ester of cellulose. As a solvent. a liquid is used which will readily evaporate and does not have any-objectionable influence upon the cigars. The suspended matter comprising the paste of tobacco powder .and applied to the cigar roll produces a firmly adhering, permanent coat upon the roll after the evaporation of the solvent and which will perform the' same function as the wrapper heretofore employed. The application of the suspended matter onto the cigar roll may be effected in different ways,

and sometimes even a better, taste and are more readily combustible than ordinary cigars. The manufacture is considerably simplified and cheapened; and the very serious losses heretofore incurred in the application of the valuable wrapping leaves are avoided by the employment of the novel kind of covering wrapper.

As a means of suspending the tobacco powder use may be made of solutions of suitable resins or-artificial resins or resin-esters. The suspended tobacco material may also be mixed with the well known additions ordinarily employed for the manufacture of cigars to be smoked for the relief of asthma such as, for instance, the powdered leaves of stramonium or thorn-apple. 1

It has already been suggested to replace the usual cigarette paper by thin foils obtained from solutions of cellulose esters with the addition of cigarette tobacco. My invention is distinguished from this by providing means of doing away with the employment of natural or artificially prepared special wrappers with the accompanying tedi 1s and very expensive application of the wrapper, which step is not encountered in the manufacture of, cigarettes. In accordance with this invention thewrapper is produced directly on the'cigar roll itself by the evaporation of the solvent, and this feature and the resulting possibility of' manufacturing large quantities of cigars on a manufacturing scale constitutes one of the important objects and advantages of the invention. There is the other important improvement that it is no longer necessary to employonly specially selected valuable wrap-- vantages are of coursenot necessary in connection wlth the manufacture of cigarettes. The method of treatment herein descrlbed is susceptible of being modified and altered.

in accordance with the convenience of the user and other conditions and different solvents and other materials may be employed without thereby sacrificing the main features of the invention as particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

I claim 1. The methodof manufacturing cigars, which consists in suspending tobacco powder in a liquid containinga combustible binding agent and applying the resulting pasty mixture to the-core of cigars.

2. The method of manufacturing cigars,

which consists in suspending tobacco powder in a mixture of a llquid binding agent with a volatile solvent and applying said mixture to a cigar-core, allowing the solvent to evaporate, and thereby forming a firmly adhering coating of tobacco upon said core.

3. The method of manufacturing cigars, which consists in suspending tobacco powder a liquid containing a solution of a cellulose ester and applying the mixture obtained to a cigarcore and allowing the apester, applying the mixture obtained to a.

cigar-core and allowing the applied matter to dry in contact with said core.

5 As a new article of manufacture a cigar comprising a core and a wrapper formedthereon by a dried and solidified coating of a solution of a cellulose ester and comminuted tobacco leaves incorporated therewith. i

6. As a new article of manufacture a cigar comprising a core and -a wrapper formed on said core by a dried and solidified solution of a cellulose-acetyl-ester with comminuted tobacco leaves incorporated therewith.
