Description
June 1929- M. ROSENFELD BAGGAGE ATTACHMENT Filed Aug. 50, 1928 Patented June 4, 1929.
UNITED STATES MENDEL ROSENFELD, OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IBAGGAGE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed August 30, 1928. Serial No. 303,032.
The present invention relates to improvements in attachments for suit cases, hand bags, or satchels and has reference more particularly to a means for facilitating the transportation of the baggage without the necessity of a person having to carry the same.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide an attachment that includes a casing having a slotted bottom through which is operable the leg members that are pivoted at their upper ends to the respective sides, of the casing, a ground engaging roller or wheel being carried by the lower end of each leg member, means being provided for concealing the leg members and the ground engaging wheels within the easing, when the attachment is not in use, addi tional means being provided for cooperation with the leg members to hold the same in proper position, whereby the wheels or rollers engage the ground during the movement of the baggage from place to place.
A furtherobject is to provide a baggage attachment that is simple in construction, in expensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the description of the invention proceeds and when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views Figure l is a side elevation of the attachment embodying my invention, showing the parts in their inoperative position, a portion of the casing being broken away.
Figure 2 is a similar View, showing the attachment in use, and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the casing, showing the position of the pivoted leg members and the rollers carried thereby disposed on opposite sides of the baggage within the casing.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally a suit case of the conventional construction, the handle therefor being shown at 2. My improved attachment comprises a substantially rectangular shaped open top casing 3, that is of such size as to accommodate the particular piece of baggage, and the bottom of the suit case may be secured in any detachable manner within the bottom of the casing, so that the sides of the suit case will be spaced with respect to the respective sides of the casing.
The bottom portion of the casing 3 is formed at each side edge thereof with the longitudinally extending slot 4 that extends from a point rearwardly of the forward end of the casing, to a point beyond the central portion of said casing. The ourpose of these slots will be presently described.
A leg member 5 of a length less than the length of each slot 4 is pivoted, at its upper end to the inner face of each side of the casing, at a point above and forwardly of the rear end of the respective slot, as at 6. A ground engaging wheel or roller 7 is carried by the forward end of each leg member, and for normally holding the pivoted leg members 5 in a concealed manner within the casing 3, there is provided a spring pressed latch 8, with each roller or wheel 7, in the manner as shown more clearly in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings.
The invention further comprehends the provision of a stop member 9, that is arranged within the rear portion of the bottom of the casing, on each side thereof,- and the forward end of each stop member is bevelled, and the bevelled portion terminates at the rear end of the respective slot at.
Normally, the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1, whereby the leg members and the ground engaging wheels are concealed within the casing and a suit case can be carried in the usual manner or placed on the floor for rest. In order to eliminate the burden of a person having to carry the suit case, the latch members 8 are released, whereupon the leg members 5-are caused to drop downwardly through the respective slots at in the bottom of the casing 3, until said leg members strike the bevelled ends 10 of the stops 9, and the parts will then assume the position shown in Figure 2, with the rollers 7 engaging the ground.
In this manner, a person may transport a suitcase or satchel or handbag from place to place without having to lift the piece of baggage and when the proper destination is reached, the leg members are again swung upwardly into a concealedposition within the casing and held in this manner by the latches 8.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided an attachment for baggage that will not present an unsightly appearance when associated with the baggage.
An attachment of this character will at all times be positive and eli'icient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed and can furthermore be readily and easily swung to an operative or inoperative position.
WVhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the in vention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an attachment tor baggage, an open top casing for receiving the bottom portion of the baggage, said casing being of a width greater than that of the baggage, the bottom of the casing being formed along its side edges with longitudinally extending slots, a pair of leg members pivoted at their upper ends to the inner faces of the respective sides of the casing, at the rear ends of the respective slots, ground engaging rollers carried by the lower ends of the leg members, said leg members and rollers adapted to swing through the slotted bottom, and stops arranged in the bottom of the casing for engagement with the respective leg members to limit the downward swinging movement thereof.
2. In an attachment for baggage, an open top casing for receiving the bottom portion of the baggage, said casing being of a width greater than that of the baggage, the bottom of the casing being formed along the side edges with longitudinally extending slots, a
pair of leg members pivoted at their upper ends to the inner faces of the respective sides of the casing at the rear ends of the respective slots, ground engaging rollers carried by the lower ends of the leg members, said leg members and rollers adapted to swing through the slotted bottom, and stops arranged in the bottom of the casing for engagement with the respective leg members to limit the downward swinging movement thereof, and means within the casing for securing the leg members and the ground engaging rollers in a raised concealed position.
In an attachmentfor baggage, an open top casing for receiving the bottom portion of the baggage, said casing being 01 a width greater than that of the baggage, the bottom of the casing bein formed along the side edges with longitucinally extending slots, a pair of leg members pivoted at their upper ends to theinner faces of the respective sides of the casing at the rear ends 01 the respective slots, ground engaging rollers carried by the lower ends of the leg members, said leg members and rollers adapted to swing through the slotted bottom, and stops arranged in the bottom of the casing for engagement with the respective leg members to limit the downward swinging movement thereof, and means within the casing for securing the leg members and the ground engaging rollers in a raised concealed position, said last mentioned means comprising a latch secured on the inner face of each side of the casing for engagement with the adjacent ground engaging roller.
in testimony whereof I affix my signaturev MENDEL ROSENFELD.
