'UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
CORYDON P. HEWETT, OF KINGSTON ,WISCONSIN IMPROVEMENT IN VIELDING TEETH FOR SEEDERS AND CULTIVATORS.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 171.566, dated December 28, 1875; application filed June 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
of Kingston, in the county of Green Lake and State of Wisconsimhave invented a new and valuable Improvement in Yielding Teeth for Seeders and Cultivators; and I do hereby de- 'Clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation oi the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this speciication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon. Figure l of the drawings is a representation ot' a plan View of my tooth, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same.
This invention has -relation to improvements in yielding teeth for seeders, cultivators, and other like machines, and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ot' the slotted or sliding joint, wh ereby the springarm is attached to the arm which is pivoted to the standard, the set-screw, and its two adjusting-nuts, to enable the screw to be adjusted without being turned, and the recessed or depressed bearing-plate for engagement with the head of the adjustable set-screw, whereby the set of the lock is regulated.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the beam, to which is pivoted, in a slot, c, which is large enough to permit a sufficient vibration, the standard B. C designates a'corrugated or serrated plate, which Vis let into beam A, and is designed to engage with the teeth or corrugations on the under side ot' plate D, which is slotted and provided with aclamping-boit, b, which passes through the beam and plate C', and serves to secure the adjustment of the plate D, regulating the pitch of the standard B through the medium of the pivoted arm ot' said standard and the spring-arm. E designates said spring-arm. This is pivoted to the plate D at its forward end, and at itsrear end is slotted at c. It is also provided in its middle portion with a vertical aperture, d, through which is passed the screw-bolt e,'whereby the set of the trip-lock is regulated, said bolt being adjusted by means of two nuts, g and h, one above and lthe other below the beam. Below the springing a sliding arm, and upon the screw-bolt c, is secured an anti-friction plate, lc, which may be anged on each side, and which receives the free end of the spring s, which is secured to the beam by the plate D. F represents the toggle-arm,
which ispivoted to the upper end of the standard B. The other end of this toggle-arm is biturcated or otherwise constructed to admit of a sliding connection with the slotted end ot' the spring-arm. The arms E and F are connected by a bolt, m, which passes through the slot c ot' the spring-arm. 0n or in the beam A is secured a plate, z, upon which the head c ot'- the screw-bolt e presses when the arms E and F are nearest an alignment, or in position to resist the ordinary pressure ofthe soil against the blade of the standard. This position or set of the trip-lock may be adjusted by the screw-bolt c to yield with greater or less difficulty, according to the requirement of the work. The slide connection of the togglevarms E and F enables the standard to assume a position more inclined than its working position when the machine is moved to the rear. The anvil .e is provided with anges or side guards z', which engage with the sides ofthe bolt-head c and assist to prevent lateral deiiection.
The present invention is an improvement upon that set forth in Letters Patent No. 158,081 granted to me, and dated December 22, 1874. 4
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The spring-arm E and toggle-arm F, havpivoted connection, and adapted to be pivoted, respectively,^to the beam-plate and standard, substantially as specilied.
2. The combination, with the foregoing-described slidin g pivoted arms E F, ot' the screwbolt c and double nuts, one above and the other below the arm E, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. CORYDON P. HEWETT.
