Description

J. C. MILLNER'.
TOBACCO CURER.
Patented Dec. 28, 1875 NPETERS, PHOTVQ-LITHDGRAPHER WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACKSON 0. MILLNER, OF DANVILLE, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CURERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17] ,481, dated December 28, 1875; application filed November 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACKSON 0. MILLNER, of Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Gurers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the heaters, furnaces, 850., and a horizontal section of the house of my improved tobacco-curer; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same detached from the house.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in tobacco curers; and it consists of the combination, with a series of graduated heaters, of drums and furnaces, and of drums, one of which having a central partition, in combination with heaters and furnaces, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A A refer to the furnaces, tapering from the point :20 a rearwardly, constituting conical draft-chambers a a, which receive the inner ends of the two larger heaters B B of the series. These chambers aid in directing and throwing the blaze and heat into the heaters, and, consequently, enabling the lattrr to give out more heat, as well as facilitate combustion, since by their shape or construction they concentrate and augment the draft at the inner or furnace ends of the heaters, and combine to increase the draft in the fire-chambers of the furnaces. The draft-chambers a a of the furnaces are provided with cut-offs or valves a a, to sever the heat from the heaters when desired. B B are the two larger heaters of the series-say, twelve inches in diameter-uniting with the next in size smaller, 0 Osay, ten inches-by the drums D D, the latter heaters O 0 being united together bythe centrally-disposed drum E, having a central partition, 6, and to the middle or return heater F, which may be proportionabl y smaller in diameter, and leads to the chimney or Smokestack G.
' By thus graduating or diminishing the respective heaters of the series the escape of the heat is retarded, thus keeping up a continuous uniform heat throughout the house or curer and, secondly, a saving of material, consequent y expense, in their construction effected.
The disposing of the drums at different points in the heaters, as shown, permits of the accumulation of heat, to be dispensed to the smaller heaters, or to those isolated from the furnaces, to enable them to give out an increased heat.
The supply of heat to the drums, and from the drums to the heaters, may be regulated by suitable valves, &c.
The central partition 6 of the centrally-disposed drum E causes the equal distribution of the heat from the several drums to return or middle heater.
The corner drums D D and drum E are provided with air-valves or slides d d 0, through which may be driven'smoke and steam or hot air in curing the tobacco, which process may be facilitated by closing a valve or cut-off, f,
in the return-heater, through which the smoke escapes to the chimney or stack G. In creating or generating steam, pans filled with water may be placed upon the furnaces and corner drums.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the graduated heaters B C F, the drums D D and E and furnaces A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the heaters B (J F, the furnaces A A, drums D D and E, having the partition e, for equally distributing the heat from the several drums to the returnheater F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that-I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACKSON 0. MILLNER.
