IMPROVEMENT IN COOPERS BARREL-HEATERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17 1,489, dated December 28, 1875; application filed December 11, 1875. I

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that WILLIAM N. MOORE, de- State of Illinois, invented certain Improvements in a Ooopers Barrel-Heater, the construction and operation of which I will proceed to explain, reference being had to the annexed drawing'making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional iew through the center.

The nature of the invention consists in so arranging a portable stove that it may be used to heat the staves of a barrel or cask on the inner side, for the purpose of warping and dryingthem into the proper shape for the hoops.

In the drawings, a represents the fire-box of the stove; B,the escape-flue into the drum H, for distributing the heat. D and E represent the opening forming the flue to the escapeflne G; G, ring on which the barrelI rests while heating, and the arrows show the direction of the draft and heat as it passes from the firebox a into the drum H, and from thence to the escape-flue 0.

It will be observed that none of the smoke and flame pass out into the barrel, but only into the large drum H, which heats the iute rior of the barrel all it is necessary to warp the staves into the proper shape for a barrel, and dry out the staves to make them fit to receive the hoops.

The top plate of the stove, having the drum H and escape-flue C, may be constructed separately, so that it may be applied to the top of any ordinary stove having a flat top plate and escape-flue passing from the top plate, as shown at B, thus COIlVeItil'lg any such ordinary stove into a barrel-heater, as shown.

Having thus described said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
