BOLER PLATFGRM.

This invention relates to platforms in connection with boiler furnaces, which platforms may be elevated and lowered in order` to give ready access for cleaning or repairing tubes or other parts of the boiler, and will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings, 4in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a boiler setting; Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the details showing a track and hoist; Fig. 3 is a side view of a corner of the boiler setting and a platform at the side thereof; Fig. fl is a plan view corresponding to Fig, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a modification, the several views being partly broken away.
ln the drawings, the illustrative form of setting has end walls 1 and front and rear walls 11. The walls are provided with the usual upright supporting members 2 and stationary walk-ways 3, parallel to the front and rear of the boiler. rthe walkways are provided with the usual hand rails 4t and supports 5. Supports 6 are provided near the upper end of the boiler for transverse I-beam tracks 7 at the front and rear, respectively, of the setting. llthese tracks ei;- tend past the end walls of the boiler setting. lf a number of boilers are set in a row, the bean'ls 7 of the several boilers will be positioned end to end to form a continuous track across the entire bank of boilers, in which case, each extreme end of the entire track will be provided with a stop `7l. Travcling hoists 8, by which the cleaning doors for the tubes which' are provided at the front and rear of each boiler may be lifted, run on the tracks 7 and are provided with load-carrying chains 10 with hooks lOa and operating` chains 9 of the well-known type. The elements thus far described are old in boiler constructions.
lthas been found, however, especially vith boilers of great height, that access to the doors in the side walls of the setting and the ends of the boiler tubes at the front and rear of the setting is diflicult and requires considerable trouble. To overcome this difficulty, in the illustrative embodiment, movable platforms are provided which can be operated by the hoists for the cleaning doors and, at the same time, will afford places upon which the workmen may stand for cleaning or repairing the boiler oi? tubes. The movable platforms may be made of horizontal channel shaped members 1G that are connected at the corners to form the sides and ends of the platforms. Cross bars 17 to form the floors of the platforms are attached to the lower flanges of the channel members 1G, so that ledges will be formed by the remainder of these channels to prevent the escape or accidental falling of tools from the platforms. The platforms are provided with hand rails 18, along one side, that are attached to the platforms in any convenient manner, and brackets 19 are attached to the other side, which brackets carry rollers 2O that are so disposed that theywill bear against and roll upon the corner boiler supporting columns 2, as the platforms l5 are raised and lowered, these columns forming tracks for the rollers. Yokes 22 are pivoted to each end of the platforms by passing the lower ends of the yokes through holes in the side channels 16, and these yokes are provided with loops 23 for convenient attachment thereto of hooks 10a at the ends of the chains 10. Supporting brackets 25 are provided at each end of each setting side wall, these brackets being attached to the columns 2, as shown in F ig. 3.
in the modification shown in Eig. 5, the rollers are disposed Within vertically mounted channel irons 27 that are firmly tached to the columns 2, thus preventing the platforms 15 from moving to and fro with respect to the wall, thus guiding the same in a fixed path as they are moved up and down.
rl`he platforms 15 at the sides of the Wall rest upon the brackets in their lowermo-st position, and in such positions they may serve the usual walk-ways for the sides of the boilers. vWhen walk-ways 3 are provided at the Vfront and rear of the boilers, the auxiliary platforms 15 will rest thereupon in their lowermost positions, but in cases where there are no Walk-ways, the movable platforms 15 may serve therefor. In installations where there are a plurality of boilers installed side by side, a Asingle platform l5 at the front or the rear of the boilers of t-he row will serve for providing access to one end of the boiler tubes of all the boilers, as the platform at the front or rear can be shifted longitudinally along the tracks 7 to any desired position. The tracks 7 extend beyond the sides of the boiler, so that al hoist 8 at thei front and rearfof the boiler may be moved to positions where the chains therefrom can be hooked to the yokes 22 of the platform l5 at the side of the. boiler, so that a pair of hoists 8 at the rear and a pair at the front of the boiler will serve to elevate and lower a platform at the front andthe rear of the boilers, as well as a series of platforms along the side wall of each boiler, incase a plurality of boilers have been installed side by side.
