BELT BUCKLE.
Application filed June 18,
This invention relates to belt buckles and the primary object thereof is to provide a buckle of the pivoted tongue type, wherein the tongue is concealed thereby enabling theentire front of the buckle to be available for purpose of ornamentation,
A further object of the invention is to pro vi'de a buckle wherein the front thereof is mounted so as to be capable of being moved to render the tongue accessible for purpose of adjustment or removal of the belt, and which upon such movement automatically effects outward or releasing movement of the buckle tongue, thus facilitating removal of the belt.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention in operative position Figure 2' is a section on line 2-2 of .Fig. 1
Figure 3 is afrontelevation of the inven tion in detached position and showingthe parts open; and i I I Figures 4 and 5, are sections on lines. lfl and 55 respectively of Figure 3.
In proceeding in accordance with the pres-.
ent invention a back member or main frame 1, is employed which has flanged sides 2, an end bar 3, and a connecting strlp 4:, which latter 1s flanged at 5, and formed w1th a cutout 6,
to receive the free end of a tongue 7 It will 7 .thus'be noted that the strip 4, and its flange 5, form a partial the tongue. 1
As depicted in Figuresand f the drawings, the end barf3,'is preferablyformed by rolling the metal in order to afford larger bearings for the tongue, where same is pivoted to thebar, the hinging or pivoting of housing for the free end of the tonguebeing effected by cutting away the bar and by'formin'g a hook 9 on the tongue which latter-engages about the bar and in the cutout. i
A front plate .10, is hinged at 11., to the back member 1 andhas flanged sides 12, which latter are formed to snap into or have frictional engagement with the sides 2, of the back member. 3 g i In, operation,it will be observed that, due to the front plate 'or cover beinghinged to the back at the end thereof opposite to; the end to which the tongue is pivoted, anddue to the frictionalflatching of the cover plate in'vposition upon the user pulling outwardly upon thefree end A of the belt, the cover,

the back'l, and under bar .3 while the opposite end B of the belt is loopedabout the end bar 3, and is secured by a snap fastener C.
s PM em emc E It will also be noted that the front plate entirely conceals the tongue and also the back and further functionsto hold the free end of the-belt in position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt'is 1. In a belt buckle, a back having anend barand a cross strip spaced therefrom and provided with an inturned flange on its inne'r side, the flange being formed with a cutout, a tongue hinged to the end bar, and a front platehinged to the back at the end thereof opposite to said end bar, the back and front plate being formed withflanges formed to snap. into engagement with one another so as to frictioually latch the front plate in posi tion, the front plate extending'over the tongue and back plate and. concealing said parts. V i
' 2. In a bcltbuckle, a back, a tongue pivoted to the back and having a free end, a'member.
connected to the baokand engageable at its rear with the free end of the belt, and having av part formed with a cut-out to receive the" for the free end of the tongue and to dispose .free end ofthetongue so as to'fornia seat a Y the latter to lie closely adjacent to the'inner face of the member, a front plate hinged at one end to the back at a point adjacent tosaid member and engageable with the free end of the tongue to hold same in its seat, the opposite end of the front plate at its rear being j engageable with the free end of the belt:
whereby upon. outward swinging of the free end of the belt same will swing the front 7 plate outwardly to relea eth'e free end of the tongue and Wlll simultaneously, swing the free end'of thetongue outwardly, and means to latch the front p ate to the b'ack.
In a belt buckle, a back, a tonguerpivoted to the back and having a free end, a member 'i co heated to the back and engageable' at-its' I rear with the free end of the belt, and with the free end .ofthe tongue "on'its front side,
a front plate hinged at one end to the back at a point adjacent to the member to hold the free end of the tongue against said member, the opposite end of the front plate being free and engageable with the free end of the belt whereby upon outward swinging of the free end of the belt same will swing the front plate I outwardly to release the free end of the tongue and will simultaneously swing the free end of the tongue outwardly, and means to 1 latch the front plate to the back.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. V
WILLIAM C. FOSTER.
