SINGLE-TANK BOILER WASHING vANI) FILLING APPARATUS.
VApplication led `October 19, 1922. Seria1,N`o..595,540.
'This invention relates to an apparatusfor Y motive has its boiler washed out and refilled, hereinafter referred to as a locomotive v stall, and from a single source, water at two different temperatures appropriate, respectively, for washing out the boiler and for filling it. v
It has long been the practice to provide means whereby water supplied at a temperature that is unsuitable fora particular use in the boiler, for instance, water which is initially too hot for handling in thewashing out of the boiler, will be automatically tempered before-it reaches the outlet throughl which itis supplied to the boiler. Another object of the present invention is to cause thisautomatic tempering to be responsive to the act of opening the outlet'intended for the release of washout water to the boiler, thereby not only limiting the consumption of tempering water tothe duration ofthe washout operation but leaving the tempering elements inactive when water flows through the same pipe to the boiler filling connection for the purpose of refilling the boiler,` for which purpose the temperature of the water may not be inappropriate. 1 f
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a system in which two different water delivering connections are supplied through a common source, and the Awater is tempered to an appropriate degree when released through one of said connections, but is not so l'tempered when delivered through the other connection. The invention proceeds upon the principle of providing one of the delivery connections, for instance, the washout connection, with a valve that not only serves to open and close such connection but causes the opening and closing of a shutoif, preferablyy in the form of a valve in a water pipe that is adapted to supply tempering water to the closing of one of the delivery connections, so that supply of tempering water, while selectively controlled according to the use to which the How over the line is being put, will be limited to not only the time during which it is needed, but to the quantity necessary to lbring the used water to the desired temperature. Accordingly, theinvention preferably proceeds upon the further principle of introducing into the supply main a thermostat connected to control the tempering water pipe, through a graduating valve separatel and distinct from the shuto which is re- .tempering water will be commensurate with the temperature of the mixture.
In the accom an infr drawing* A: vFigure l shows by perspective view a plant embodying the several `features of the invention; and
lFigure 2 is a sectional detail view of the valve of the washout connection-, v
1 represents a blowoff pipe adapted to be connected through a drop 1a with a-'locomotive which is to be cleaned out, and 2 repre- A sents a separator into whichblown off products, comprising sludge, water, and volatiles, such as steam and vapor, are blown, and fromwhich the sludge and water after giving up their volatiles will escape through a drain pipe 3 having a goose-neck 4 of sufficientx height to prevent too sudden evacuation of the separator under ,blowoff pressure, and
having a direct outlet valve 5 whichmay vbe opened when necessary. Abovethe separator 2 is a condenser 6, preferably incorporated in the same physical unit with the separator,
in accordance with known practice. Condenser 6 is equipped with spray pipe 7 con- 'r trolled by valveV 8 which is responsive to thermostat 9, and said condenser has a discharge pipe 10 delivering to a tank 11 hot water resulting from the condensing operation. 12 represents a water supply main through which water from the tank 11 is forced by pump 13, and 14L represents a steam pipe fordelivering live steam to the ypump at a ratel determined by valve 15, whichis of known construction, purchaseable in the open market 'at a date prior to the present invention, and which is responsive to load on the water main 12 which is transmitted to water through flexible hose 2l and washout" nozzle 22. Y 1
As thus itardescribed, the operation olf the apparatus follows conventional and hnown principles, and the parts may be ot known construction.
According to the present invention, the washout connection 2O is provided rwith a valve 23 which, in addition to its usual 'tunetion of orijiening and closing the washout connection, is adapted to open and close a pressure pipe 24 which controls a. valve 25 in a cold water pipe 2G which communicates at 2T with the water pipe 12 which feeds the pump 13, so that whenever the valve 23 is opened to supply water `for washing the boiler, valve 25 will be opened to release cold water into lthe hot water main to temper the saine, whereas the opening ot the illing connection 18 while valve 23 is closed will draw from the same water main, hot water untempered and therefore more appropriate l'or boiler tilling purposes.V Y
In order that the water in the main 1 2 may not be changed'undesirably in temperature, cold water pipe 26 is provided with another element ot control, consisting ot a valve 2S under control of a thermostat 23L introduced into the intake pipe 12a ot the pump 13 and responsive to temperature effects in said intake pipe. Thus, the delivery of tempering water issubject to a dual control, one element ot which consists of a valve which is responsive to the vselection of the washout connection for delivery of water to the locomotive, and the other element of which is responsivetothe temperature of the Water being delivered to the line. Y
"While any suitable torni of valve may be used for the connection 23, we prefer to use a construction such as shown in Figure 2, according to which thevalve plug 1s provided with a port 23a for the water to be delivered,
open, air will be-wasting from pipe 2l,
but in such small measure as to be imma 'terial from the standpoint oi? economy.
lWe claim:
1. ln a boiler washing system,a het water source, a locomotive stall, a washout water outlet and a lilling wateroutlet at said stall, a delivery pipe connecting said hot water source to bothsaid outlets, a washout valve controlling the washoutwater outlet, a filling valve controlling the lilling water outlet, a tempering water pipe communicating*with the delivery pipe at a point in advance of the connection of the delivery pipe with said outlets, a shutol'l' controlling the escape of water from the tempering water pipe to the delivery pipe, a means ot communication between the washout valve and said shutotl' whereby the shutoff is opened and closed by the opening an d closing ot the washout valve, a graduat ing vvalve controlling the flow of tempering water released by said shutoii', and a thermostat controlling said graduating valve and subjected to temperature of water in the delivery pipe after the water has beenv tempered.
2. A boiler vashing system as described in claim 1, in which the means of communication between the washout valve and the shutoit' comprises a pressure pipe controlled by the washout valve, and a pressure actuated element controlling saidV shutoff.
Signed atfChicago, illinois this 16th day of October, 1922.
