Description

May 14, 1929. J. L. CROLL ET AL AUTOMOBILE DOOR HOLDER AND ANTIRATTLER Filed May 4, 1928 INVENTORS On 4C7 I [oyd Zia/11w" 07W ATTORNEY Patented May 14, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L, CROLL AND LLOYD F. LUTZ, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
AUTOMOBILE DOOR HOLDER AND ANTIRA'ITLER.
Application filed May 4,
Our invention relates to improvements in automobile door holders and ant1-rattlei.'s.
One oi the objects of our invention is to provide a novel device 01. the kind described, which is simple, cheap, durable, not likely to get out of order, and which may be easily and quickly applied to an automobile now in use, and which when installed will serve to make the door hold closed and prevent its. rattling and accidental opening, and which may be applied so as to tend to lift the door, whenthe door is closed to prevent its sagging.
The novel features of our invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates our invention,
Fig. 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section of an automobile provided with our iinproven'lent, the door being shown closed.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a. section on the line 4- oi: Fig. 3
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the automobile body, having the jamb 2 to which the door 2) is hinged, one of the hinges 1-, being shown.
The lower end portion of the jamb 2 is arcuate and concave, which portion is designated by 5. In this portion oi? the jamb is provided an inclined hole 6, which inclines upwardly and away from the hinge 4:. In the hole 6 is mounted the body 7 of a casing, the outer end oi which has an annular peripheral flange 8 which is fastened to the jamb with screws 9. The hole 6 extends downwardly inwardly beyond the casing body 7 so as to receive the inner end of a plunger 10, which is recig'irocative in the casing body 7.
The plunger 10 has at its outer end a head 11 slidably mounted in the Easing body 7' and extending normally outside the body, and which is adapted to be struck and; depressed by the adjacent edge of the door 3, when the latter is swung tothe closed position. The inner end of the plunger 10 is slidably mounted in a hole 12 provided in the inner end of the casing body 7, and at the inner end of said 1923. Serial No. 275,048.
body, the plunger is provided with a transverse hole 18 therethrough in which is mounted a cotter pin 14, which by striking the inner end of the casing body 7 limits the outward movement ot the plunger 10,
A coil spring 15 encircles the plunger 10 within the casing body '7, the inner end of the spring bearing against the inner end oi the casing body 7 and the outer end of the spring bearing against the head 11, the tension of the spring being such as will normally force the plunger outwardly;
In the operation of our invention, when the door 3 is closed, as shown, the edge of the door will strike the head 11 which, urged by the spring 15, will force the door upwardly and away from the jamb 2, thus holding the door from sagging, keeping it from opening accidentically, and preventing its rattling.
hen it is not desired to have the device littas well as force the door from the jamb to which it is hinged, the jainb 2 may have the casing body inserted in a horizontal hole, designated by 6, and; shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. WVith the device so disposed, the action is similar to that already described, excepting that the plunger does not have a lifting effect on the door.
Modifications of our invention, within the scope of the appended claim may be made, without departing from the spirit of our invention.
lVhat we claim is:-
In an automobile door holder and antirattler, the combination with an automobile body having a doorway, one iamh oi which has a. concave arcuate portioi'l, and a. door hinged to said jamb above said arcuate portion, of a men'iber supporting means on said arcuate portion, a lifting and pushing member reciprocative 011 said supporting means and adapted to engage the edge of the door and lift the latter and push it away from said jamb, and resilient means for forcing said member in a direction such that the niiemher will contact with said doorwhen the latter is closed. V
In testimony whereof we have: signed our names to this specification.
IJ. LLOYD F. LUTZ.
