Description

W. H. MYERS COMBINATION TOP FOR GAS RANGES May 14, 1929.
Filed Nov. 1'7, 1927 INVENTOR WILLIAM H. M YERJ W 115m ATTORNEYS.
Patented May 14, 1929.
WILLIAM H. MYERS, F BRooKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION TOP FOR GAS RANGES.
Application filed November 17, 1927. Serial No. 233,904.
My invention relates to combination open and closed tops for gas ranges.
Heretofore gas ranges have been made with open tops or kettle rests to give better ventilation and combustion and quicker heating, or with closed tops, which, while not so eilicient as to ventilation, combustion and heat ing, permit the whole top to be heated by one or less than the whole number of, usually four, burners.
Gas ranges have also been proposed with interchangeable open and closed tops, and with circular kettle openings to be closed by circular lids.
My invention consists of a combination open and closed top having the advantages in both adjustments of the open top in re spect to perfect ventilation and combustion and effective heating, and comprises as an entirety, in its present referred embodiment, a range top having urner openings and fingers serving as open kettle rests projecting by preference radially into said openings, and removable lids to cover said openings and serve as closed kettle rests, said lids having radial outward projections to fill in the spaces between the inwardly projecting fingers or open kettle rests.
I may make the corresponding edges of the fixed inward and movable outward projections correspondingly beveled downwardly and inwardly but spaced to assist ventilation, combustion and heating, or I may make the corresponding beveled edges close fitting but scalloped or indented to assist ventilation, combustion and heating, as hereinafter more fully described.
I11 order that my invention may be fully understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I at present prefer to carry the invention into practice and then particularly point out the invention in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a combination open and closed top for a gas range, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the same on the line 9r-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view showing a modified form of my invention.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, number 4 designates the solid top of a gas range, which may have small ventilating openings therein as shown.
, and I may make said several openings 5 separate or connected as desired. Each fingered opening 5, is provided with a removable lid 7 cast integrally with outward projections 8 to fill and cover the radial spaces between theinward projections 6, and thus serve as a closed kettle rest.
To support the star-like lid 7 thus formed flush in its corresponding opening 5, I prefer to cast integrally with the solid top 4-, across and beneath the outer ends of some of the radial spaces between the fingers 6, shelves 9 on which the outer ends of the lid projections 8 rest.
To provide for effective ventilation, combustion and heating when the closed top is used, I prefer to space slightly the corresponding edges of the fingers 6 and lid projections or fillers 8, and bevel the same inwardly and downwardly so that the beveled edges 10 of the lid will cover but not close the intervening spaces.
I may also to the same end as illustrated in Figure 3, scallop, indent or serrate the edges of the fingers and top at intervals around the fillers 8 and close the beveled joints between the fingers and fillers, so that the expansion of the top and lid over the lighted burner will cause the lid to be lifted and rise above the solid top, and thus open without uncovering the spaces at the scallops, indentations or serrations 11.
The lids 7 may of course be joined in pairs or otherwise according as the corresponding openings 5 are separate or connected, and each lid is provided with the usual socket 12 to receive the lid lifter.
It is evident that the specific embodiment of my invention herein illustrated may be greatly varied in detail without departing from the boundaries of my invention as defined by the following claim.
I claim as my invention:
A combination open and closed top for gas ranges comprising an open top having a large central gas burner openin corresponding to the central part of the gas urner, from which radiate openings corresponding to the radiating parts of the gas burner, leaving inwardly projecting kettle rests between the radial opepings, 11nd a, removable lid having a spaced from the corresponding edges of the solid tcentral portion substantiall to fit and radial openings of the open top to permit cover the central opening and so id portions the passage of the air and gases through the 10 radiating from the central portionesnbstanspaces thus formed.
5 tionally to fit and cover the respective radial In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
openings in the open top the edges ofthe ra- V dieting portions of the lid being slightly WILLIAM H. MYERS.
