IMPROVEMENT IN NAILS FOR WIRE-FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 l, 184, dated December 14, 1875 application filed May 31,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER S. SMYTHE, of-
Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Wire-Fence Staple; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a plan view. N
This invention relates to certain improvements in staples for wire-fences; and it consists in a' staple having a short prong with chisel end, and a long prong, the latter of which terminates at one end in a chisel end, and at the other in a beveled head, and is provided with barbed notches to hold it more securely in place.
In the drawing, A represents the staple having the short prong a, which embraces the wire, and the long prong b, which is driven into the post to hold the same. The said prong b has an elevated head, 0, which receives the blows of the hammer, and prevents the bending and mashing of the short prong.
This headris beveled or tapered at f toward hold it secure against accidental withdrawal, I
and its point e is beveled upon both sides to a sharp chisel-edge.
The said chisel-edge, instead of cleaving and splitting the wood, as a point does, cuts the fiber of the same, and when driven in makes more secure connection.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- As anew article of manufacture, a staple for wire-fences, having a short prong, a, with chisel end, and a long prong, b, which latter is provided with an elevated beveled head, a chisel end, and rearwardly-inclined barbed notches, substantially as and forthe p'urpose described. 7
