My invention relates to i1. baby bed and more especially to a. type of baby bed or crib in which the mattress supporting element may be raised or lowered at will.
I am aware that heretofore certain types of cribs have been provided, in which the mattress supporting element can be raised or lowered, but in the types of which I am aware the elevating and lowering means are complicated and not of the simple type which I have provided in this invention.
An object of my invention is to provide a baby bed in which the mattress supporting element can be raised or lowered at will, and in which the adjustable mattress supporting element is capable of being entirely removed and in its stead placed a fixed mattress supporting element.
Another object of my invention is to provide a baby bed which can be knocked down and assembled in a very small package for shipping purposes and for storage when there is no need for the same.
Another object of my invention is to provide a baby bed having an adjustable mattress supporting element, together with a cover for the structure which can be raised up and slid down over the back of the structure, and also having a side portion which can be opened outwardly to form a support, or a bridge between the baby bed and another bed in the bedroom, or if desired the said hinged portion can be permitted to swingentirely downward so that the baby bed can be rolled against the side of an ordinary bed with the side portion of the baby bed swung entirely out of the way. Or said hinged portion when opened outwardly can be placed between the mattress and springs of an ordinary bed, thus forming a locking device securing the two beds' together.

Figure 10 is a plan view of a portionof the structure on the side of the frame composed of the members 51 and 52. v Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numerals 10, 11, 12 and 13 indicate corner posts of my baby bed. The postslO and 11 are fixedly secured to each other by means of the angle iron bars 14 and 15 and the posts 12 and 13 are likewise secured to each other. .These end sections are releasably secured to each other in the following manner: The front portion of the baby bed i as is best shown in Figure 1, has the pins l6,
l7, l8 and 19 projecting therefrom and the side portion 20 has the bayonet slots 21, 22, 23 and 24 therein, so that in assemblying the structure, these bayonet slots are placed over the pins and the member 20 is given downward push or stroke to cause the pins to engage the restricted parts of the bayonet slot. The upper portion 2590f the front side portion, is hingedly connected to the portion 20 by the hinges 26, 27 and 28 and pivotedly secured to this member are the slotted members 29, the slot in said members being inserted over the bolts 30 in the corner portions 11 and 12, and these members 29, have the notches 31 which are adapted to automatically engage the bolts 30 when the door 25 is lowered to horizontal position.
The portions 20 and 25, and also the rear sides, bottom, ends and lid are covered with screen wire 32, and the portion 25 is also covered with a heavy quarter inch mesh wire 33 for purposes of re-enforcing this section so that it will not sag under unusual weight. The rear side of the baby bed has a frame which is similar to the frames 20 and 25, but said portion 34 is made all in one piece and has the bayonet notches therein similar to the bayonet notches shown for the memmy baby bed baby bed her and the corner members 10 and 13 have projections thereon indicated by the numerals and 36 by means of which the back portion 34 may be releasably secured in assembling the baby bed tor use.
The end portions of the baby bed have conventional screen wire secured thercorcr, all of the screens being secured to the corner posts by means of a curved strip 36 fitting against the outer side of the screen with a pin 37 braddcd to the inside of the corner posts and to the end members 14 and 1,5.
A lid member 40 is placed on top oi the baby bed, and is ph otedly secured to the by means ot' the arms ll which pir-- otally connect to the lid as at 42 and pivotally to the corner posts as at 4,3, which permits the lid to be raised and slid down over the back portion as is indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2, and as is shown in tull lines in Figure 4.
The end members 1 1 have secured on their inside portions the angle iron member at?) and the space between the members 45 and the members 14 is adapted to receire the adjustable mattress supporting mechanism, or if it is desired to dispense with the adjustable mattress supporting mechanism and make a convertible baby crib, then a convt-entional mattress supporting element which not adjustable with relation to the frame, may be inserted in the space between the members 15 and 14.
The adjustable mattress supportingmcchanism comprises the angle iron members which are turned inward at-an angle 01 90 degrees and the portions 51 extend along the sides of the structure and meet at its middle point and a reinforcing strip is secured along the entire side portions, thus making a rectangular base which extends from one end section to the other end. A similar rectangular mattress supporting element 53 is made up of the end angle members, 54 and 55 with the side angle members 56 and 57, and secured to this rectangular portion 53, by means of the coil springs 58, is the wire net work 59 for supporting the mattress. To each of the corner portions of the mattress supporting frame 53, are secured the angle iron members 60 and 61, 62 and 63, and secured to these members are the members (54- which have the curved project-ions 65 which are adapted to slide up and down in the corner posts 10, 11, 12 and 13. Pivotally secured to the members 54 and are the members 66 and 67, which members at their lower ends are pivotally connected to the members 68 and 69, which members 68 and 69 are pivotally connected the member 50 as at 70 and 71. Secured to the corner members 60 and 61 are the tension springs 7 2 and 7 3 and the other ends of these tension springs are secured to the members 66 and 67, which springs have a normal tendency to the operating members 76 which penetrate the members and the member 7st and 55 and on the lower end thereof there is secured the member 77 which has pirntally connected thereto on the pins 78 and 7f), the slotted members 80 and 81, the slotsv in said members being adapted to d bly engage the pins 82 and on the members (38 and lit When it is desired to lower the mattress supporting frame 51-3, the members 76 are given an upward pull, which causes the incur bers 80 and 81 to pull the nrmibcrs it} and 67, 6S and (39 inwardly at their central pointzi against the tension of the springs 72 and 73 until the bolts 85 and 86 have reached a point inward from a straight line drawn from the bolts and 71, 87 and 70 rei-pcctircly. at which time pressure can be applied to the members 75 and the mattr supporting frame 53 will be lowered and will assume the position shown in Figure 5.
In Figure 5 I hare shown my baby bed assembled in a lmock-dinrn position. This is done by removing the front and rear portions 20, 25 and 31 by raising the slalom)- ward and removing them on account ot the bayonet hook structure, renmring the top portion -10, and lifting the adjustable mattress supporting 'l'rame entirely out of position, and when this is done a. specially notched rectangular frame work 91 is secured over the top, with the clqtensioiis llil and 93 extending over and secured in place on the bolts 30 and the various parts oi the structure are assembled in lanockcdalown position as shown in Figure 5. The members have bayonet slots therein which fit over the projections 17, 19 and 35 which normally hold the frontand rear portions in place when the baby bed assembled for use. These members 90 are suitably notched on their upper surfaces to receive the mattress supporting element on its side and to receive the edges of the front and rear screen por tions and also the lid portion as is shown in Figure 5.
The member 39 is secured to the member 50 and is adapted to fit into the space between the members 45 and 14. The strips 9. are secured to the lower side of the frame composed of the members 50, 51 and 52, and the ends of these members 95 are turned upwardly and the members 20 and 34: fit inside of these projections. 7
It is thus seen that I have provided a baby bed in which the mattress supporting element can be adjusted in raised and lowered position and which baby bed can be knocked down for shipping and which is composed entirely of metal, which makes it extremely sanitary and substantial.
In the drawings and specifications I have set forth a preferred embodiment of my invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a metallic baby bed, a framework, corner posts made of angle iron forming a channel at each corner, a vertically slidable mattress supporting element mounted to slide in said channels, and means for raising and lowering said mattress supporting element, said means for raising and lowering comprising pivoted members extending from the mattress supporting element, other pivoted members pivotally connected to the lower ends of the first pivoted members, tension means for holding the pivoted members in one position, slotted members slidably mounted on the pivoted members, and means for operating the slotted and pivoted members to raise the mattress supporting element, and to allow the mattress supporting element to assume a lowered position.
2. In a baby bed, vertical end portions, vertical side portions, vertically disposed gnideways at the corners thereof, a lower member spanning the distance across each end portion, two vertically disposed mombers pivoted at their lower ends in the spanning member, a second set of members pivotally connected to the upper ends of the first pivoted members and having their upper ends connected to a second horizontally disposed spanning member, a vertically disposed slidable member mounted in the upper spanning member, two diverging slotted members pivotally connected to the lower end of the slidable member and having their slots in sliding engagement with the first named pivoted members, vertically disposed guide members on the ends of the upper spanning member, and a coiled spring connected to the guide members and to the upper pivoted members.
3. In a baby bed, a framework, a collapsible mattress supporting element mounted in the framework, said mattress supporting clementcomprising a bottom portion, a. top portion across which a resilient member is secured for supporting a mattress, toggle joint means between the upper and lower portions, a vertically slidable member secured in the upper portion, slotted pivotally secured to the lower portion of said vertically slidable member, pins secured on one of the toggle joint members and being adapted to slide in the said slot, the pins and slotted members limiting the outward movement of said toggle joint members, and an upward pull on the vertically slidable memher being adapted to cause the toggle joint members to collapse and to allow the upper portion of the mattress supporting member to slide downwardly and rest on the lower portion thereof.
4. In a baby bed, a framework, a mattress supporting element mounted for vertical movement in the framework, members secured to the framework and to the mattress supporting element and being pivotally connected to each other at their medial portions,
vertically slidable means for limiting movementof the pivotal members in one direction and being adapted to cause the pivotal members to ap n-oach each other to allow the mattress supporting element to slide down- \vardly in the framework.
