UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
OATHRINE A. GRISWOLD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ABDOMINAL CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,012, dated December 14,1875; application filed October 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CATHRINE A. GRIS- WOLD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Abdominal Corset, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved abdominal corset; Fig. 2, a perspective front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved abdominal corset, which combines, with a perfect fit, a comfortable support for the abdomen, so as to relieve the same from any strain or drawing, and throw the weight of the same on the shoulders, they being the points best fitted to assist in supporting the abdomen.
The invention consists of an abdominal corset, combined with an additional supporter, which is extended below the lower part of the same, and attached to the side stays and front part of the corset, being made of a central and two side sections connected by adjustable straps or lacings.
In the drawing, A represents an abdominal corset of the usual construction, which is pro vided with shoulder-straps B, attached to up ward-extending projections at the front and rear parts of the same. The shoulder-straps B are made adjustableby front buckles or other fastening devices, being out curving to adapt themselves to the slant of the shoulders of the wearer, and fit snugly to the same.
The front and rear extension and connecting shoulder-straps have fully been described in the Letters Patent granted to me hereto fore, under date of July 4, 1871, and No. 116,585, and therefore require no further description.
At the sides and lower part of the corset A is arranged an abdominal supporter, C, which extends below the lower edge of the corset, and forms, when applied to the body, a dishmg or rounded-01f support for the lower part of the abdomen. The supporter G is made of a central band, D, and two narrower side bands, D, of which the former is applied, by one or more button-holes, to buttons a at the lower front part of the corset, while the side bands D are firmly secured to the side stays, which run in upward direction to the rear end of the shoulder-straps, and transmit thereby the strain to the back and shoulders.
The sides and front bands of the supporter (J may be connected by eyelets and lace-strings but are preferably attached to each other by two or more straps and buckles, b, that allow the exact adjustment to the condition of the abdomen without the unequal pressure of the meshes of the lacings.
The curved or dishing extension of the corset formed by the supporter takes up the weight of the abdomen below the point of greatest expansion, and throws the same, by means of the side bands, in an upward direction, first upon the hips, which take up a share of the strain caused thereby, and then, by the side stays and shoulder-straps, to'the shouldersh The transfer and distribution of the weight of the abdomen to the upper part of the body relieves the muscles of the former from any unpleasant strain, and furnishes for fat or fleshy women, or women enciente, a superior corset, that dispenses with separate supporting-bands, and gives a feeling of comfort to the wearer.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The abdominal supporter 0, formed of a central band, D, and curved side bands D, the former attached to front of corset, and the latter to side stays or hipbands, as shown and described, for the purpose of throwing the usual strain upon the hips and shoulders.
MRS. GATHRINE A. GRISWOLD.
