CONTAINER.
Application filed June 19,
This invention relates broadly to head-attaching devices for containers, and more specifically to a sealing ring for cans and pails.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple form of ring or band whereby the heads of cans, pails and other forms of containers may be removably attached to the container body.
A further object is to provide a sealing ring having simple and practical means whereby its ends may be secured in attached relation.
In describing the invention in detail, referonce is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention; I
Figure 2 is a view of a can or pail, partly in side elevation and partly in section, illustrating the invention applied thereto; 7
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view, showing in side elevation the two ends of the ring in detached relation;
Figure 4 is a similar view showing said ends attached;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modified form of fastening means; and
Figure 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4, showing said modified form.
Referring to saiddrawings, 1 designates the body of a can or pail of the type commonly employed as containers for paints and like materials, the same having at its upper end an outwardly turned bead or roll 2.
Mounted on said can or pail is a head or cover 3 which fits closely within the top of the body 1 and which has a circumferential marginal portion or rim 4: which, having an upwardly and outwardly curved formation, is adapted to seat in overlying relation to the top of said roll 2, as shown in Fig. 2.
Mounted in closely embracing relation to the roll 2 and rim 4, when the latter occupies seated relation to the former, is a sealing ring 5, substantially semi-circular in cross section, which is formed of a single strip or length of sheet metal having its ends occupying rigidly attached relation. 7
As shown in Figs. 1 to a, inclusive, one of the end portions of the sealing ring is provided with a longitudinally disposed terminal member or tongue 6 of relatively nar- 1928. Serial No. 286,624.
row width, and provided in said end portion shghtly rearward of sald tongue is an aperture or slot 7. Said one end portion is designed to overlap the opposite end portion of the ring, which has formed therein at or ad acent the extremity thereof an outwardly pressed longitudinally extending rib-like lug 8 of a size and form adapted to enter and protrude outwardly through the slot 7 of the overlapping end portion, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4:. A shoulder 9 formed by the rear end of the lug 8 is designed to seat against the metal of the ring-at the forward end of the slot 7, thus'to secure said end portions of the ring against separation by strains exerted longitudinally of said end portions. 'To permit of the formation of the abrupt shoulder 9, an
aperture 10 is provided in the overlapped end portion at the rear end of the lug, as shown.
Also pressed outwardly in the overlapped end portion at a suitably spaced distancefrom the lug 8 is a longitudinally extending rib-like keeper 11, rendered open at its forward end by the provision of a cut-out opening or aperture 12 in the ring. Said keeper is designed to receive interiorly thereof the tongue 6, thereby to retain the overlapping member or end against chance disengagement from the overlapped end.
The structure shown in Figs. 5 and 6 differs from that in Figs. 1 to it only in the forms of the slot 7 and. lug 8 vl hen it is desired to remove the cover from the pail, the tongue 6 is pried out of engagement with the keeper 11, as by means of a pointed tool, whereupon the overlapping end of the ring is'drawn outwardly to disengage the lug 8 from the slot 7, following which the ring may readily be stripped from its seat.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a container having a roll at its top, of a cover having a rim for seating upon said roll, and a sealing ring for embracing said rim and said roll, said ring having end portions adapted to be at tached in overlapped relation, the overlapping end portion having therein an opening and the overlapped end portion having formed thereon an outwardly directed lug adapted to protrude through said opening for interlocking said end portions, the overlapped end portion also having formed therein an outwardly pressed keeper and the overlapping end portion having a tongue terminal receivable by said keeper.
2. The combination with a container having a roll at its top, of a cover having a rim for seating upon said roll, and a sealing ring for embracing said rim and said roll, said ring having end portions adapted to be at taohed in overlapped relation, the overlapping end portion having therein an opening and the overlapped end portion having formed thereon an outwardly directed lug adapted to protrude through said opening for interlocking said end portions, the over lapped end portion also having formed therein an outwardly pressed keeper, open at its forward end, and the overlapping end portion having a tongue terminal insertible beneath said keeper through the open end of the latter.
3. A sealing ring of the character described having its ends in overlapping attached relation, the overlapped end having therein an outwardly pressed lug with an abrupt shoulder at its rear end, and the overlapping end having therein an opening in which said lug is receivable for securing said ends against relative longitudinal separating movement, said overlapped end also having therein an outwardly pressed rib-like keeper provided with an opening in its forward end and the overlapping end having a tongue terminal receivable in said keeper through said opening.
In testimony whereof, I afIiX my signature.
HENRY KIELBERG.
