ARTICLE 'eonTAIIING Application filed November TWith this principal object in view the in- 1 vention contemplates the provisionv of a case having a thumb or finger engaging knob Vprojecting therefrom adapted to bemoved when the case is arranged in the hand of the user for operating certain mechanism to of the case so that it may be grasped for removing the saine. f Q
By the particular construction andarrangement of parts, ashereinafter specifically described and claimed, lprovide a vde- Y vice of the above indicated character which is simple yand substantial .in construction, can be cheaply manufactured, and will be thoroughly eliieient and practical in use. The vinvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is ak perspective view of my improved case, showing in dotted lines f the same engaged in a hand of a user,
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through the case at one side thereof,
Figure 3 is a horizontal longitudinal section taken on line 3-3 of' Figure 2, e y
Figure t is a cross vertical section taken on line l--a of Figure2, and j Figure 5 is a perspective viewl of portions of the device removed'from thev case. Y Referring to the drawings the ynur neral 10 designates a rectangular casing-having side walls 11 and 12, top wall 13, bottom wall .14, and an end wall 15, the other end being closed bya closure plate 16 hingedly connected by pintle` 17 tol of the case. The closed end 15 of the'case is provided with an elongated opening 18 through which the articles are adapted to be dispensedQ Arrangedwithin the case is l,an elongatedy v tl-shape'dframe 20, secured to the bottom of 1 vthe case by means-of -a rivet 19, the bight ortion 22 of said frame being spacedfrom the wall 11 of thecase'b'y means of small studs 21 formed 'onsaidbight portion, rwhile the outer ends of theupper and lower kmem- 0F WINONA, MICHIGAN; oT'I'o c. on SAID TEDDY o. bers of said U-shaped frame engage the opposite side wall 12 of the case. The height of'thisframe is less than the height of the case so that the upper member or plate thereof is spaceda slight distance from the top wall 13 kof the case, the objectof which will lbe set forth as the description proceeds, Cut from the upper member or plate of the 1 elongated U-shaped frame is an ear 23 which extends upwardly and parallel with the bight portion 22, said ear providing for p ivotall`y connecting thereto, at' 24, an operating arm 25 arranged for swinging movement between the bight portion of the frame and the wallll of the casing, and on the lower vend of this arm is a bent portiony or pusher 26 working in ,an arcuate slot 27 ein. the'bight` portion 22 of the' frame and .protruding a suflieient distance within said frame toy engage an article containedtherein. Slidable onthe upper portion ofthe U- shaped frame is a member 28 preferably constructedfof sheet vmetal and comprising a bodyV portion 29 having a' downwardly extendimg'flange 30 riding'on the upper portion of said frame, with a depending flange 31 at one side which slidably engages the outer ksurface of the bight portion 22 of the frame, and a forwardly projecting member k32 projecting into adepression in the top of the case for operating the slide as hereinafter explained. The member or slide 28 is connected to the operating arm 25 by means 3e to the arm and pivotally connected, at 35; to the depending bekseen that when the member 28 is slid within the casing on its pivot so that the pusher 2G working through the arcuate slot 27 willengage and push oneof the articles out of the slot 1 8.
The upper wall of the casing l() depressed adjacent the closedL end lo of the casing,`as at 36, the rear wall of said depression having an opening v37 through which extends the forwardly projecting member 32 of the s1ide,.said member being provided with a finger or thumb engaging portion or lip 8 8 atits free end so as to be easily engagedfor operating-the slide. t is to be notedthat the opening through r`which the member 32 ofythef slide/28 extends forms a guide for said member, and that the lip 38 flange 31 of the slide. It j'can.v
it will swing the arm 25 pivotally connected adjacent the rear end of said frame, as at 41, so that the free end of said plate will engage against the center of the article next to the plate. The plate is held in contact with the articles for feeding the same by means of a coilspring 4t2, connected to a small lug 43 extending upwardly from the plate and to an upturned flange 44 lat the rear end of the U-shaped frame. It
can be seen that the coil spring l2 will hold the plate in engagement with the continguous article so that all of the articles will be yieldably forced towards the bight portion 22 of the U-shaped fran'ie as they are dispensed. Also attached. to the'lug i3 of the plate 40 is one end of a coil spring 45 the other end of which is attached tothe flangeof the slide 28 for returning the same to initial position after being operated.
In order to fill the case with sticks of gum or like articles, the closure plate 16 is swung upon itspivot 17 and the articles forced between the portion 22 of the `U-shaped frame 20 and the yieldable feeding Aplate 40, so as to be contained withinthe til-shapedv frame for dispensing them successively on operation of the dispensing` mechanism, the hinged closure vplate being returned to its posi-v tion for closing the case. When it is desired to dispense gum from the case, the operator holds the case in one hand so that the thumb rests in the depression 36 in the` top wall 13 of the case against'the upturned end or lip 38 of the loperating member of the slide,
and by pressure on this lip said slide will be. `moved to swing the arm 25 forwardly against tension of the spring so vthat the pusher at the lower end thereof will engage 'the stick of gum adjacent the portion 22 of the U-shaped frame 2() andV force it partly through the opening 18 inthe end wall 15 of' the casing.` The projectingv portion of the stick of gum may then be easily and conveniently' grasped for withdrawing the same from the case. Vihen the stickkof guml has been withdrawn the plate 40 will force the other sticks of gum within the frame 20 towards the wall 22 so that upon opera.- tion of the slide again another stick of gum wvill be dispensed. It is to be noted that the lateral extension or pusher 26 on the operating'arm 25 engages the rear ends of the sticks of gum inv forcing them throughgthe opening 18y in the end wall 15 of the case and that said pusher projects through Vthe bight portion of the AU-shaped vframe 'a distance only for engaging one stick of gum at a time, so that upon each operation of the device one stick of' gum will be dispensed. It is also to be noted that the lugs 21 carried by the sidewall 22 of `t-he U-shaped f frame space said side wall from the wall 11 of the case so that the operating arm 25, link 33, and depending flange 31 of the slide 28 may operate freely between said walls. A
In the present instance thepartsof the device are so' constructed and arranged that by removing the 'rivet 19 which extends throughv the bottom wall 14 of the casing and the lower side portion of the U-shaped frame the said frame and structure supported thereby may be slid rearwardly through the rear or open end of the case. W hen removing the operating structure from the case, the outer end of the member 32 of the yslide is forced downwardly at the opening 37 so that the upturned lip 38 will not interfere with rearward sliding movement of the ttl-shaped frame and structure carried thereby in the case. It is also to be noted that the opening 18 through which the gum is dispensed is of a size corresponding with the sticks'of gum so that only one article may pass therethrough at a time, so as to prevent morel than Vone articleV being dispensed by frictional contact of one with another, the article next the onebeing dispensed engaging the front wall of the casing at one side of said delivery slot.
