HAT COVERING.

This-invention relates to improvements in hat coverings, and has more particular reference to hat coverings of that type constructed of waterproof fabric and adapted to protect the hat from the harmful effects of water, such as when worn while raining.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a hat covering of the above kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction, and which ma be constructed at a small cost.

A further important object of the invention is to provide effective means for retaining the cover upon the hat and aiding in retaining the hat upon the head while alfording the wearer additional protection from the rain as is especially desirable in rainy and windy or stormy weather.

Further objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present hat covering is especially serviceable in connection with hats having high crowns, such as felt hats or the like, and for this reason consists of a relatively deep crown portion 5 and a relatively wide downwardly flaring brim 6. The crown 5 is formed of a plurality of similar sections 7 having their adjacent edge portions inturned and joined along radial lines as at 8, the joining of the sections being effected by suitably cementing or vulcanizing the inturned edges of the sections together, depending upon the character of water proof material from which the covering is made; In this way thecrown can be conveniently made with the ends which are 1927. not conspicuous or likely to develop leaks after the crown is properly finished and blocked.

The lower ed e portion of the crown 5 is directed outwardly and then inturned to provide a substantially hook shaped bead as at 9, and the inner marginal portion of the brim (2 1s turned upwardly and outwardly in hook IZIShlOn so as to fit in the hook-shaped bead 9 of the crown for effective interlocking with the latter so that when the crown and rim are oined together by cementing or vulcanizin a durable and etlicient joint of a neat character is had. i

The forward portion of the brim 6 is provided with an inturned outer edge portion 10 adapted to engage under the adjacent brim portion of the hat to aid in retaining the covering upon the hat, and in order to produce a most eificient and sung engagement with the hat brim at this point, the free inner edge of the inturned portion 10 is formed with a bead enclosing a strip of elastic as at 11. This strip of elastic normally contracts the inturned portion 10 into snug engagement with the hat brim, although permitting said portlon 10 to be stretched slightly for facilitating application of the covering 2 or removal thereof from the hat.

Integral with and depending from the rear portion of the brim 6 of the hat covering is a depending skirt 12 adapted to loosely surround the back of the neck, an d the lower ed e of this skirt 12 is provided with a shirrir ig cord 13 which may be brought around the front of the neck and tied to not only aid in retaining the covering upon the hat but to further aid in retaining the hat upon the head dur ng windy inclement weather. The skirt 12 1s provided with narrower tapering side extensions 14 which will pass across the ears and cheeks of the wearer for additional protection against the elements.

In use, the forward brim portion of the hat is inserted between the forward portion of the brim 6 and the inturned forward edge portion 10 thereof, whereupon the covering is lowered to enter the brim of the hat within the brim 5 of the covering, the remaining portion of the brim 6 of the covering then flatly engaging the remaining brim portion of the hat. lVith the hat thus covered and placed upon'the head, the skirt 12 is drawn into close relation to the neck and the ends of the shirring cord 13 are tied at the front of the neck. 7

- In this way the hat is effectively protected against harmful efi'ects of the rain and substantial protection is afforded against accidental displacement of the hat from the head while the cheeks and neck of the wearer are sufficiently covered to prevent the rain from coming in contact with the cheeks and neck of the wearer.

The manner of use as well as the advantages of the present invention will bereadily understood and appreciated by thoseskilled in the art, from the foregoing description, and minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of theinvention as claimed;

What I claim as new is A hat covering comprising a crown portion, a brim member having an opening and joined with the crown portion at the edge of said opening, said brim member being provided at the forward portion of its edge with an inturned portion, an elastic member attached to the inturned-portion, a skirt portion depending from the rear edge of the brim and having an edge extending from end to end of the elastic member, and a shining-cord carried; at the. lowerfree edge of the skirt portion.
